Appalachian Trail, West Mountain and The Timp is a 6.3 mile moderately trafficked point-to-point trail located near Bear Mountain, New York that offers scenic views and is rated as moderate. The trail is primarily used for hiking and camping and is best used from April until November. Dogs are also able to use this trail but must be kept on leash.
Point-to-point hike from the Appalachian Trail intersection at Seven Lakes Road to the eastern trailhead of the 1777 Trail, passing by West Mountain and The Timp via the Timp-Torne Trail. Lots of views of Bear Mountain, the Hudson, and points west.

First to ReviewFun, moderately strenuous point-to-point hike. We spotted one car across the road from the 1777 trailhead on Route 9W then drove to Seven Lakes Drive to where the Appalachian Trail crosses. Right away you get some elevation gain as you head south on the AT, and then there is a long ridge walk with views out both east and west. Great vistas of Bear Mountain, the Hudson and the Perkins Tower, as well as west toward the Palisades Parkway and beyond. We then caught the blue-blazed Timp-Torne Trail up to the West Mountain shelter, where there are more spectacular views. From there we descended into the nice quiet col between West Mountain and Dunderberg Mountain then climbed up to the Timp for even more spectacular views, with the skyline of Manhattan visible in the distance. We continued on the Timp-Torne Trail until it hit the 1777 Trail, which gradually descends toward 9W, passing by some residential areas. If you have two cars this is a great way to see a lot of views and a nice chunk of the eastern part of Harriman State Park.
