May 2019 trip to Southwest, second visit to NM, last time was 15 years ago in late fall. Day 13 Next (Main Goal#16 of trip) was Bandelier National Monument. Along NM-4 saw enormous and total wildfires devastation!! At entrance gate decided to skip it in favor of Santa Fe the capital city (Main Goal#17of trip). Here views on city should be incredible but in fact are just average. This site is not much elevated above city only about 7100’. Also can see few surrounding mountain ranges. Location of Old Fort Marcy, historic information. Some graffiti damage, was able get to cross before thunderstorm came.

Parked in the lot at the top of the lookout and the stroll was short and simple to the cross. We hung out for an hour or so watching the sunset, which was beautiful. The atmosphere was quiet and peaceful (thanks to passing storms and random video shoot).

Easy, short, paved path with great sunset views. A fun place to learn some Santa Fe history and also sit down and people watch, but it wasn’t too crowded. Calming atmosphere!

Short little walk. Lots of graffiti on the little educational signs.

The paved path is very short. There are a variety of plaques with interesting history of Santa Fe. The actual cross is a couple of I-beams welded together and painted white. I was disappointed that the area was poorly cared for, there was garbage and an old office chair littering the path, some graffiti, and the cross is less than awe inspiring. It is a pretty area and you do get a limited view of Santa Fe as it the highest place in the city and is reported to be a nice place to watch a sunset. I cannot confirm the sunset as I was there late morning.

A Santa Fe classic hike/walk. The views are worth the 15 min walk to the top

More walk than trail. With time to kill, we walked up from the plaza. I was not wearing hiking clothes (dress and sandals) and easily managed the walk. The view from the top, looking over the city, is amazing. We were there in the fall so the colors changing was a bonus. The easier walk is from the parking lot but you miss the "historic markers". Great little piece of history.

Not a hike, you can pretty much drive right up but this is THE BEST place to watch the sunset. And it’s so easy to do!

This is a memorial to the history of Santa Fe. The "climb" is a switchback ramp with small plaques commemorating moments in the 350+ year history of the city. Behind the memorial to martyred monks is the site of Fort Marcy. This hike is a good way to start acclimating to the altitude if you're a flatlander. I'll take Jerry's advise and go up there again in the evening to see the sunset. The panorama is wonderful and the colors are night should be fantastic.

This is a great place to see the sunset very close to downtown Santa Fe. Panoramic view to the west and south. The park is well maintained, stairs are lit after dark. Many people gather at the hill top for sunset, including many kids. The climb is mild.
