San Lorenzo Trail is a 5.5 mile moderately trafficked out and back trail located near Abiquiu, New Mexico that features beautiful wild flowers and is good for all skill levels. The trail offers a number of activity options and is best used from March until September. Horses are also able to use this trail.
off road driving
While I have listed this trail as Off-road, it can be used for hiking, bird-watching, horseback riding, or trail running. The terrain is a sandy wash as it closely follows the Rio del Oso, but as it climbs it turns to rocky areas. The road bed can be very deep sand, so be sure to have a winch handy. This trail is listed as being in Abiquiu, but it is not. This trail is just off hwy 84 about 2 miles north of the intersection of hwys 84 and 285. San Lorenzo is an old abandonded encampment. It was once a thriving multi-family village. The road originated as a trail between villages, then became a horse-drawn wagon road, a finally a jeep road. The trail has been in existence for 400 years. Lots of history here.
