Overall we really enjoyed this hike! Forest Road 639 is easiest with an off-road capable vehicle as we helped a Subaru to freedom after getting stuck. The hike is great with a steady incline that increases over the last mile or so. Watch the weather forecast... we were caught in some heavy rain even with low chances predicted. San Leonardo Lake is another one of New Mexico’s hidden treasures! Good for a day hike or for backpacking over night!

Wasn't able to get to trailhead (April 19, 2018). The road to the trailhead was impassable via a 2wd vehicle. During spring, you would likely need an high clearance off-road vehicle to get to trailhead, or be willing to park hike up to the trailhead. My experience.

I am trying to plan a 4 day backpacking trip into Sante Fe Wilderness and this area along with the Middle Fork area looks beautiful Anybody know how one may create a loop trail that hits both these beautiful areas?

Lovely hike along a stream through open forest, full of wildflowers. Having just arrived in NM from much lower elevation, my husband and I experienced significant altitude adjustment symptoms on this hike, but I persevered to the lakes and was rewarded by their picturesque beauty. The trail crossed the shallow stream several times via logs or rocks.

The road from Truchas (639) was pretty rough. High clearance necessary and 4x4 helpful for that route. Trail was really nice, considerable downfall but no problems. Lake was great.

God's country for sure! Very little traffic and one of the best picture areas in Nm!
