Note: As of April 2019, the road to the trail head is closed and requires a walk to get from a parking area to the trail head. Please refer to the park page for updates. This trail is relatively close to Albuquerque (1hr 15min to trailhead). San Pedro Parks is a small wilderness area located in the Santa Fe National Forest. It's unique in that there are no major peaks or cliffs or steep parts. When you arrive at the center of the park it is beautiful mixtures of open meadows and thick woods.

Road closure is Seasonal only. As other reviewers mentioned, this is a relatively busy trail. In fact, it’s probably the busiest on the western side of the Nacimientos/San Pedros. I hiked this last in mid April, on a low snow year and was glad that I had my snow shoes after I left the road and hit the actual trail. That said, I did notice some people had made it to the reservoir in boots. Even in April, there were two other parties, which is actually rare for any trail in the area. The San Pedros are probably the most green and marshy area in NM, so more often than not, it’s muddy.

The trail to the lake itself is not outstanding, and the description on AllTrails of it being "little used" was not our experience. That said, the lake and the meadows that surround it are beautiful. And if you hike past the lake you find much more solitude and more pretty meadows and flower fields.

Beautiful trail, beautiful lake. Loved it. Bring some bug spray and your fishing rod. A little muddy by the lake.

A pretty easy, flat hike. Beautiful scenery. Make sure to check the water levels though, as the lake was pretty barren when we were there, which meant finding drinking water was not easy & the flies were terrible so cooking was a little hard as well.

In another few weeks the mud should dry out but there are still snow patches currently. Plan to get your feet wet. Great short hike with kids or dogs.

The road was open when we went 5/18/19 and we enjoyed a easy and short hike to the lake. Water level is high and sections of the trail were covered in water when we went- nothing that would be a problem if you don't mind taking creative side paths or getting your feet a little wet. There are a couple trees that you have to maneuver over but it isn't difficult. The Lake is beautiful along with the streams and waterfalls that are in full swing at the moment. Great hike for kids and dogs.

Hike this trail in late April 2019. Significant snow pack still and very muddy. The road to the Trail head is closed and requires a 3 mile walk to get from parking area to the trail head. I’m sure it will open when the snow clears. Usually a very good hike but very muddy today and Lots of fallen trees in the path. I am sure that the forest service will clean up before Hiking season begins there. For now, bring waterproof shoes. It is unusual to see so much moisture in that area.

Great hike for kids and dogs. The trail both ways is easy, nothing very steep. The scene as the trail opens to the lake is gorgeous. During our trip the area featured a group of cows both in the meadow and down by the lake, which was an extra treat for the kids.

A nice easy trail especially since it was the second we had done that day. Always good to get to see a remote lake.

This trail is short, but beautiful. It’s an easy going flat trail through the San Pedro Wilderness that leads to the lake. The dogs loved it.

Mon Jul 23 2018

Easy hike with great views. The reservoir itself is busy but if you hike past it it’s a more moderate level hike with great views of the reservoir.
