Getting There

Starting off from the trailhead you skirt along the right side of the canyon/mesa. Along the trail, you'll notice many petroglyphs etched into the dark rocks from various people groups and cultures ranging from Native Americans, Spanish settlers, and American ranchers. The trail is a loop or you could make an out and back hike. While the first half of the trail you're hiking right next to the canyon/mesa side but if you do the loop the trail heads right through the middle of the canyon on the way back. On the way back you're too far to see the petroglyphs. This is a great hike with nothing too strenuous as far as elevation gain. A great hike for families and petroglyph viewing. Be sure to visit the visitor center a mile up the road and the other places to hike at the National Monument.

Petroglyph National Monument - (505) 899-0205 - www.nps.gov/petr

From I-40 exit onto Unser Boulevard (exit # 154) west of Albuquerque and head north. After a little over 2 miles you'll come to St. Joseph Avenue which is a cross street. Take a left onto it and you'll immediately be at the parking lot and trailhead of the Rinconada Canyon trail. One mile up the road on Unser Boulevard past the trailhead is the Petroglyph National Monument visitor center. Turn left at Western Trail and follow the signs to the visitor center.

It’s really fun to see! Sometimes you can’t see the Petroglyphs but if you walk out the same way you came in sometimes you can see more!

Great short hike while visiting New Mexico. There is no shade at all, but we went on a gloomy day so it was great. The path is all dirt and mostly leveled, so it was pretty easy. Bring binoculars, wish I had brought one but you can still see some Petroglyphs with out it.

Very sandy, be prepared to empty your shoes! Won’t see your first petroglyph until .4 from the trail head. Very easy to follow as it’s roped off with stakes and wire. Forgot to turn off recording as I drove up to the next spot.

Nice hike along sandy paths. Good views of petroglyphs - especially if you have binoculars. No shade so be prepared with water.

Some cool petroglyphs that are worthwhile seeing, but otherwise not too much to write home about. Bring binoculars since a lot are a good bit off in the distance.

Easy and fun hike - especially in the morning... cool breeze and very few people! I can't imagine doing this trail in the summer time - you would probably get heat stroke very quickly.

Very sandy , beach like in places trail. Only a small area near any Petroglyphs if you are going for that reason. If so, go to one of the other trails nearby. This is mid May, we were before noon and it was extremely hot. No shade. Be sure to have water and a hat I’d recommend. Certainly not a good place for summer. I enjoyed the different topography from the foothills and mountains, and it was fine for a nice walk.

Trail and Petroglyphs were a bit underwhelming, maybe a guided tour would be more enjoyable to add context.

Sandy trail - a curse on the way up, but great for knees on the way down. I jogged and stopped at 10 or so of the signs. Missed the first few because the little plaques are so small. Saw more petroglyphs than I’ve ever seen on one trip. Bring gaiters if you got ‘em.

Super soft, loose sand about half of the trail. Was wearing decent trail runners and had to dump sand out twice, and normally that’s not an issue! Not really much in the way of scenery either. Good for exercise though! No shade at all!

This trail was perfect for the spring time. Because of the lack of shade, make sure to hike it early or in cool weather. We went around the loop twice for a decent workout during covid-19 isolation!

Great trail. It got a little cold and windy today, but the initial overcast was nice since the trail has no shade. I completed this trail in a little under an hour stopping briefly for some water partway through.
