This trail along the ridgeline takes you out to the North Peak, a significant landmark of the Sandia Mountains. Along the way there are overlooks and side paths that provide impressive views of the Shield, the North Peak above it, the Needle, and the western canyon below. Most of the trail is along the Crest Trail (#130), but make sure to watch for the faint path to the west (left) to take you back up to the ridgeline, through some beautiful Aspen groves, and out to the North Sandia Peak. You know you've reached the peak when you find a couple of old cement foundation blocks from a signaling beacon used during World War II.

It was really windy and rather cold. The trail itself is not that great but there are frequent offshoots to lookouts that make the hike worth it. The views from the North Sandia Crest are actually overshadowed by some of the lookouts along the way.

Beautiful trail, we took an alternate route suggested to us by another hiker on the trail. Suitable for all skill levels and a great hike for dogs.

Loved that the trail is mostly in the shade, there were lots of points along the way to get spectacular views, the strong scent of pine, and cool temps. The last part of the trail (0.4 miles to the end) was overgrown and difficult to find the path. The AllTrails map was a lifesaver!

Nice trail. The views at the end aren’t all that great - it’s more about the journey. Good views along the way and most of the trail is in the trees and shade. I enjoyed it!

Great tree cover. Nice views of the west valley. Easy terrain. Downhill on the way out, uphill on the way back.
