Technically, the Lajunta Trail is 1.2 miles down to where the Red River meets the Rio Grande River and 1.2 mikes back up. You can go farther, to other trails if you like, but the hike back up is very steep and rated as difficult. After hiking down .8, you come to a fork. That is where you can choose one of the longer trails. All of this info is available in the flyer at the trailhead.

Hiked this with my family, including an 11 and 13 year old. The view going down from the La Junta Campground was super impressive. The rocky, steep grade kept us moving slowly. The confluence of the Red and Rio Grande was a sweet reward. Picnicked and tried to fish with no luck. Took the River Trail back to Little Arsenic Rim Trail. This last .6 was a beast. Would suggest doing this hike earlier than 2/3 pm. Got very warm!!

Absolutely beautiful hike through the canyons. We were able to hike down towards the confluence of the Red River and the Rio Grande. We followed along the Rio Grande for a while and took some great pics. Trails were pretty slippery and steep in some areas but nothing a good pair of shoes and balance can't handle. Elevation is between approximately 6-7000'.
