Easy forest hike above 10k feet to a 1930s CCC project. From the trailhead hike south along the paved trail to the right of the restrooms. A few hundred yards along the trail the pavement will turn to dirt. There is an intermittant hand-rail, always stay to the left of the rail. At 0.25 miles the trail will turn sharply left and ascend a stairway. Take the stairs to the top. At the top turn hard right and look for the fork in the trail. Take the right fork to Crest Trail #130. The trail will switchback through the forest most of the rest of the hike. At 0.55 miles the trail forks again at the junction of a forest road. Hike right on the road and follow the road to the cabin area. At 0.75 miles reach the CCC - Kiwanis Cabin. Return via Reverse Route.

Decent trail

I have hiked this trail twice with my daughter who is eight and she loved it. Definitely be aware of your kiddos once you get to the cabin. Sheer cliff drops around, but fantastic views. Fun family hike and a good way to spend half a day with the drive up the mountain.

Easy family friendly hike. Saw 2 toddlers make it to the top, picking wild flowers all the way! If they can do it, you can! Weather was perfect today, 66 degrees at the top with slight breeze. Bring a picnic lunch. The view from the top is amazing! Ask for map and directions at the Crest House gift shop. Pretty much all trails will lead to the Kiwanis Cabin, just different views. One route takes you through the forest with lots of shade while the other takes your along the cliff. Perfect short hike. Took us about 1.5 hours and stopped to take plenty of pictures.

With current construction it was hard to find trail head. Check with tram lodge for a better map. Nice hike though. Windy.

Came to the top of mountain to see the view without knowing of this trail’s existence. Was very pleasantly surprised upon finding the trail and the views it afforded. Would certainly recommend to others.

This is such a fun hike. The views are breathtaking and the trails are clearly labeled. I cannot wait to go back and expand more on the hike!

This is the actual trail I took and it was pretty nice to hike even at 7. Took some time to get there and had to hurry back to get to the last tram down. Great views between the trees.

Spectacular views at the start of the trail (by the restaurant) and at the cabin! You can see the top of the tram from the cabin as well. The slushy snow and fallen trees kept it challenging to stay on the trail at first (in April), but the views were well worth it! Would definitely do again but would probably wait until summer.

Hiked from the tramway to the cabin. Beautiful views, secluded and snowy, but the snow was packy and there is a sure trail to follow.

Beautiful views. Did in addition to the full south crest loop. I would say this is not a moderate hike, it is an easy hike. Cool building, lots of signs for information

We had to take shelter in the cabin during a thunderstorm. Dangerous lighting and slick trails made passage impossible and its intended use as a shelter was a relief as we safely sat out the storm. There were awesome views even from within the shelter which made the experience breathtaking.

Beautiful views and a cool stone cabin. The graffiti in the cabin is sad. Part of the loop is closed for meadow restoration, but people have clearly climbed over the fence anyway. Don't forget that this trail is at 10,000 feet. Relatively easy trail at sea level or even ABQ level feels a little more intense at that altitude, but I saw a fat guy in flip flops at the cabin!

Sandia Crest is a great place to snow shoe, way better than skiing, From the tram station, take the South Sandia Crest Trail (#130) and hike towards the Kiwanis Cabin. You'll have great views of City of Albuquerque down below, and the mostly tree covered trail gives you the necessary wind protection.

I went up there a few days after it snowed. Parts of the trail had foot deep snow which got difficult but the end result was amazing. I'll go up there again when there's no snow.

I like this trip when it is hot down in the valley and I don't feel like driving to the boonies. A bit busy usually, but there are spectacular things to see, including vistas, meadows, flowers and of course the Kiwanis rock Cabin. -- For a hiker, this is an easy trail. If you don't hike much, I'd say it is easy to moderate. I think children 8 and over would be fine too. Just watch the ledge in places.
