Did this loop last year in October, clockwise up 3 gun, South Peak to Crest trail then down hawkwatch. Great hike but Hawkwatch was less of a trail than I anticipated, haha!! Hard to find or non-existent and very steep down washes with a lot of scree. Made for some sporty trail finding!! About 2 mile from the trailhead the Hawkwatch trail is clear and well marked, but not the middle section up to the Crest. I had fun but I might take a different trail down in the future. Enjoy.

We have done this route both directions and it is indeed a very challenging but rewarding loop hike in the South Peak area. Caution is advised from the post overlook on the hawk watch trail up to the Sandia main ridge and crest trail. This section is very steep, unmaintained, and potentially dangerous part of the hike. Good boots and hiking poles are advised, particularly if you decide to descend this section.
