Rented an ATV to drive the trail, which is steep, narrow and heavily rutted/rocky in places—but the payoff at the top was worth it. Beautiful alpine lake surrounded by steep cliffs on one side. We hiked around the lake to the goat paths that lead up the mountain to the south, and were rewarded at the top with almost 360 degree views to the Mesa and Taos Ski Valley. We then hiked across the mountain meadow at the top to a rocky outcropping, where we met volunteers with the state fish and game department who were counting large herds of bighorn sheep far below in the valley. While the parking lot by the lake is crowded, it’s easy to hike away for an additional adventure before returning to the bottom of the trail.

This is the worst off road trail! Lots of huge rocks in road! Extremely treacherous! DO NOT ride a 4 wheeler, on this trail! Very dangerous! Never again will we ride it! Thanking God for getting us down safely.

Our first time on this trail. We loved it. Water was about 35" deep where we crossed. Lots of old mining buildings along the way. Beautiful views at the top. We hiked around a bit. Our dog Eeyore's birthday and this is some of what he loves to do. sheep at the top. Only one other vehicle on the trail today. A few OHVs too. Make sure you have a high clearance vehicle. Definitely narrow and rocky in spots.

We took our Jeep on a Saturday in July and it was so busy with ATVs that we turned around and didn’t make it even halfway. Highly trafficked, very narrow trail. We kept having to pull over for kids going too fast and families who don’t know the rules of off roading. There were tons of kids out there without adults. It just made us too nervous. One tried to pass us too fast and then spun out and flew off his ATV! I have a 4in lift on 35s and the creek crossing at the trailhead almost came past my headlights....we wouldn’t have crossed if we had known it was that deep! It was super deceiving! I’d like to try this again on a weekday in fall hoping it won’t be as busy.

Done this trail several times. You have to drive through a creek if you're in a jeep or truck at the very beginning of it, if the river is high it's a no go. not a lot of technical driving, but very rocky and bumpy so it will beat you up a little. Lake at the top is worth it! We even saw sheep up there.

I’ve attempted this trail the past two years visiting my brother. May, 2018, and June, 2019. Both years I was unable to get all the way to the lake due to impassable snow roughly a mile from it. Both years I’ve taken a rental being just a stock Nissan Frontier. It definitely gets a little sporty for the truck but it makes for a fun trail! Definitely recommend, and definitely will be attempting to get to the lake next year, probably around July, August time frame so hopefully the snow will be melted!

Awesome trail, a lot of fun. We camped at the top, had the whole place to ourselves after dark. Cold and windy this time of year, but worth it for the views. Trail is great, only down side is two-way traffic on the narrow parts. Gets pretty precarious trying to go two wide in some parts. Highly recommend!

Great trail there are a few rocky areas but not bad. I’d say this is an easy trail for any side by side. Took us 45min up and about the same coming back down.

This is the off-roading trail that takes you to Goose Lake. Goose Creek trail is different so be careful not to confuse these. I completed this trail in a stock Tacoma TRD off-road with no issues. Very bumpy trail but easy to follow. Most of the trail required 4-low and there were various ridges/boulders to crawl over (they were not too difficult). Trail was about 10 miles and took 1 and a half hours to reach the lake. The lake is awesome and there are plenty of spots to set up hammocks and have lunch.
