We came by way of the Dale Ball Trails from Picacho Peak back in March, and the other trail up to Atalaya was closed. Well worth the extra distance from Picacho. The views are spectacular and the trail got much more adventurous and fun once you started to approach be Atalaya. Interesting scenery and a great way to spend a day. Definitely bring plenty of water.

Awesome hike. We took the harder way up and the easier way down. Bring lots of water!

Great trail with easy access! Can be pretty crowded on the weekends, of course. We made a loop of it and, from Atalaya, continued over to Picacho. There are some sections of the trail going up that are pretty steep, but the views and fresh air are worth the climb. The Dale Ball trail system is well marked once you drop north of Atalaya and makes looping back to the TH a breeze.

Super fun trail! Great view of the city lights over Santa Fe at the top. Would recommend going either at sunset or sunrise. Just make sure you have flashlights and know how to get back down if going at sunset... unlike us.

If you don’t have the time to start at St. John’s, and good hike and workout. Parking can be an issue here.

Great 180 degree views south/southwest from the top. Santa fe, Sandias, Jemez range and Mount Taylor. Hike it few times a month for exercise because its short but steep. About 90 minutes round trip and people still pass me frequently. Lot of runners. Arrive early in peak season to get a parking spot. Best at first light.

Challenging hike with great views at top. Starting trail is St John’s #174 runs into Atalaya #170. Length is more like 7-8mi depending on how you go. Trail option for “less strenuous “ adds about .5mi 2each way. We went up strenuous option and down less to see the difference, hike was 7.5mi. One note: coming back was not marked as well. There was sign for #170 this way, then you come to a tee with no sign. Go To the right!
