Getting There

Short hike with nice views that passes an unusual stone livingroom. Catch the blue blazed Hewitt Butler Trail. It climbs a rocky area, then crosses the beginning of the red blazed Tourne Trail. Continue past the red trail and up a fairly steep slope. Upon reaching the top there are some nice views to the northwest. In an open area to your left is an interesting stone living room, complete with chairs, arm rests, love seats, hassocks and end tables, all made of stone. The view from the living room is a nice one, making it a great place for lunch. Continue on the blue trail and it begins to descend steeply down a rocky area and crosses the red trail again at the bottom of a rocky ravine. Continue on the blue. It begins to climb again and you'll shortly reach the summit, known as Osio Rock, with excellent 360 degree views thanks to the gypsy moths killing all the trees there. Turn around and retrace your steps back down and catch the red trail in the ravine. After short scramble over rocks its an easy walk back to the car.

the scramble section of this trail is way too short and easy to be fun, and the view at the top isn't really much of a view I'd recommend skipping this

Definitely required more effort than I anticipated, even though we took the “easier” route. Very rocky and the flies were insane. Great payoffs throughout.

Good hike, Great TRAILS. If you don’t have hiking experience don’t do as your first time. Build yourself up for a hike like this one.

Slippery when wet! Definitely recommend doing when dry for rock traction. Though it’s lovely to have a foggy mountain mist view and also see the clear day type of view. There are no parts of the trail that felt dangerous despite the difficulty rating of Carris Hill. The steepness provides a great workout and test of all the foot flexion. Our actual path was the figure 8 on the bottom of the map, Otter Hole, much of the HT, Chikahoki, Carris Hill, and a tiny bit of green.

We loved this trail. Did it with the kiddos (4&6). It’s a perfect family hike! Beautiful views and quiet.

BEAR!!! Read on to see that part! I really enjoyed myself here, so quiet on a weekday. Didn’t see a single person. But I did face off with a freaking BEAR. I sat to take an early water and bagel break. I was with my dog. Suddenly this beast comes over a hilltop about thirty yards away, and stops, staring at us. My dogs tail was completely tucked under her body with fear, but she stared frozen nonetheless. I waved my shirt around, and held it over my head to make it look like there was another torso over me! It still stared. It could’ve charged and gotten to me in five seconds flat. I was shaking. So I started grunting super loudly! And that made it turn and walk back to the other side of the hill. But then I saw it go down the trail we just came up. After that, kept hiking. Saw a blue tailed skink (or its relative), which was beautiful. Amazing view of Manhattan waaay far away. I continued past Osio rock on the blue trail, then hit the red and headed north back to the start from there. Quiet and shady. Banged a stick on trees and rocks towards the end, to avoid that damn bear again.

Decent workout took about an hour, stone living room and city views before are the best part! Easy to follow trails as well as this map!

Great views on much of the blue and red trails between Otter's Hole and Oslo Rock. Some areas had standing water today to avoid, but nothing too hard to manage. For the area on the blue trail to choose easier vs rockier path-the rockier starts out just fine and gets to a pretty steep all rock area. Enjoyed it, but some may prefer the less steep option.

So close to home and never disappoints. Done this 4 times in different directions and for only 2 miles it has a bit of everything. Great views, steep inclines and declines (if you choose that route) and rock scrambles.

This trail is great! Moderate is a good rating as you don’t really have too many strenuous spots but overall just very consistent rocky uphill/downhill terrain. There is a part where you can select to go the more difficult steep part, and I chose to go the easier alternate route because I had my dog with me who occasionally struggles with big rocks. You have plenty of great areas to rest with beautiful views!! I will definitely be doing this hike again.

Such a great trail. Went 3/30, some parts were flooded but easy to move around. Nothing really blooming, but deserted and peaceful.

Did this a few months back without Osio rock. Today did the whole hike in reverse of how i did it last time. A bit of a challenge going the opposite way with rock scrambles Again great panoramic views and 360 view from Osio rock.

Follow the black on blue blazes once past the stone living room to join the red blaze bearing right. If you bear left it dead ends not far from where they both meet. Great hike but doing the complete loop past the peak can be difficult at times.

I walk this area several times a year with friends and family and we enjoy it every time. This is such a great hike if you are in the area or even if you're willing to drive out. It has a wide range of sights, climbs, and wildlife that will make you want to come back in different parts of the year! The view of the skyline and the area alone is worth it. i really cannot recommend this hike enough!!
