I absolutely love this app, but this trail is terrible. Course changes for no reason, leading you through the woods instead of following trails that go the same way. The better way to explore here is to take one of the marked loop trails from the river and once you come back, take another. Make sure to take the white trail. Don’t do this loop please.

3.5*/7.8m/3h50 1/4/20. Nice lake, views & ruin of foxcroft. Went clockwise and cut off the loop on far side of skyline drive by taking castle loop (white) which was well blazed.

Crowded and lots of treacherous leaves, but dry and great temperature

DO NOT FOLLOW ALL TRAILS. Everything was good until I got off the white trail after the castle atop the hill. All Trails' map took me way off the trail. At times, there was at least a clear footpath where others had gone before me, even though there were no blazes to be seen. But at one point, I literally had to cross Rt 4 and bushwhack to get to what appeared to be an old, decommissioned trail. Everything up to the castle was great, quiet, beautiful. After that, just stick to the road or head back!

I did this counter clockwise I think? Lol it was definitely easier but what a workout regardless!! Great sights!! Took me 4 hours around 10 miles. Get there early. I had to wait and I arrived at the lower lot at 830

Clockwise on the giant loop is noticeably more challenging and recommended if you want more climbs. The counter clockwise direction seems to feature longer steadier but almost invisible climbs that don’t really challenge you like you feel when you head the other way.

Took this counterclockwise. Northwest side has a section with an unmarked trail. Better would be to continue north on the well marked brown and orange trails, which loops back where the unmarked trail (which is not that noteworthy) ends. Would add about 1.5 miles to the length. Otherwise this is a nice trail. West side has few travelers and interesting building remnants, and less car noise. I think I prefer this clockwise though, will have to try that again.

Solid trail. Not extremely challenging but enough variation to keep its interesting. Well-marked routes overall. I think I prefer taking the yellow hoeferlin vs the white trail, more variation and slightly more difficult, though abt half to 3/4 mile shorter when doing the loop. Good for families and dogs. Lots of bugs in some places, definitely spray yourself.
