Not 100% sure If you need a permit, as you have to park by the rest stop it was kinda weird. but we have a permit since my husband fishes nearby, there is only 1 red trail markers and some are faded. You can completely get lost if you don’t have a gps. We missed the view because it’s hidden by a huge rock so if you see a huge rock on your right make sure to climb and you’ll see the view, the flag, and the star we went all the way down by the abandoned cars and we were off. It’s ok because I needed the workout. Hiking shoes a must you can tell no one visits the trail that much because it’s over grown. Hence the trail marks. It’s a out and back, going back it splits into a Y make sure to stay on the left as it took as off again and we found 2 jeeps doing an off road ride that was so cool. But then we realize we’re off the trail the rocks were no joke as we did them twice going down and up! It was intense. Def Bring friends if you go not a single person we saw doing this hike. Also watch out for bears we didn’t see any but if you see a fresh poop cut your hike short.

Decent hike. Low impact for a pretty good payoff. The first view at the flag is less than .5 miles. The other overlooks after that don't pack quite the same punch, however the trail itself is quite lovely. I was the only one in the parking are and did not come across anyone else along the way. Does seem as though people take horses on this trail as I saw their tracks and droppings. There were very few bugs as compared to some other recent hikes I've been on. if you are looking for a short, low intensity adventure, this would be perfect. Keep in mind the trail is poorly marked and the red markers are very faded. While the path is well worn and obvious for the most part, there are a few spots where you could get thrown off. In general, while acending, just stay to the right of any forks and you'll be peachy. Although I did not come across any bears, I was cautious as recent reviews said they were in the vicinity. Because this trail has such seemingly low traffic, I would not have been surprised if I wandered into a bear's path.

The trail is an easy incline to the flag which has a great view of the reservoir and you can see manhattan in the distance. If you go farther you will find two vehicles. I put the distributor cap back on. ha! in my photos the snake is the end point as per the app. No real bug issue as the humidity was low. As for the ticks if you stay ON trail its not an issue but always after any hike do a double check.

Bear Beware! Overall this was a very easy trail. I had to cut my hike short because I stumbled across a fresh pile of bear poop. Other reviews have also stated sighting of bears so I did not want to risk it since I was by myself. The first lookout, next to the flag, was very beautiful. I also found some flipped over/crushed cars on the ridge line. Interesting. Highly recommend this trail, just make sure you have a group!

I did this to the first look out by the flag pole then proceeded east down the trail. Promptly turned around after sighting a large black bear crossing the trail about 100 yards in front of me. No worries, just turned around and went back. The bear never noticed us. Just be watchful. A great hike. This was in September 2019.

One of my favorite hikes I always try to do this at least once every summer! Just be careful because it is private property!

Super easy hike. Little elevation. Nice views. Bit rocky in spots but not bad. Didn’t see anyone else on the trail.

watch out for dirt bikes, ATVs, 4x4s. it is clearly the most common use of these trails. i almost walked into a dirt bike on the very first stretch of single track. otherwise fun ramble. is one of the NJ 'high' peaks.

Only went to first lookout! View worth it! Not too long. I followed this app’s map and the trail went with it. Would have definitely gotten lost without this map to follow. Enter grassy areas and the other comments are also correct. Also...left and found 3 ticks on me. Where bug spray kiddos!

This is a dope hike to say the least. Sitting at the top of the mountain rn taking in the sick nasty views. 10/10 would recommend drinking a brew up here (even tho i'm not). But please take the can with you when you're done and don't leave it up here like a couple of savages did, rude.

Super cool trail for someone in intermediate shape. Trail is not marked well but can be followed. Pull off on rest stop on 23N. Walk up toward mowed field on far end of rest stop. Trail starts here marked with red dots on poles. Walk along skinny trail by high way for a little and then make a sharp right. We walked right by this the first time. There are two small logs on the ground where this right turn is. If you make it to a fork where one path leads out to the highway and one path leads into the Forrest with no trespassing signs you have gone too far. Once you make the right turn it’s pretty easy to follow up to the flag pole and star. Can be pretty steep and rocky at some points. You can keep walking up the trail from the flag pole point but there isn’t much more to see past there.

The beginning of this hike is a little strenuous and a bit steep depending on your condition but is so worth the reward at the top. The view from the flag pole at the top near the beginning is great but continue along the trail for a few more minutes more along the Ridge for an even better view or the entire upper and lower Manhattan skyline line together! Continuing a short hike farther and back into the woods you’ll find 2 old wrecked cars, a Honda and Datsun. We spent a fair time trying to figure out just how they were even able to get the vehicles where they finally remain. Over all we had a great hike and highly recommend for the fantastic views of the NY skyline, lakes and rolling hills. I will definitely return for a fall visit to see the skyline in the distance beyond colorful foliage.

Really enjoyed this trail. Great work out and very rewarding view. A bit difficult to find the beginning of the trail but thanks to some previous comments we were able to figure it out. At the end of the rest area there is a small field , that is where it begins and the rest is just common sense. There are some old cars we found on the trail which was different. Def would go back again.

This hike is amazing ! The trail guidelines and markings are hard to find definitely recommend going with someone who has gone before . It’s a 15 min hike to the overlook of a skyline of the lake/ and NYC skyline beautiful and then the trail continues farther back .

a little difficult to figure out where the trail started but found it after walking left up the concrete about 400 ft from the rest area. Views from the top were spectacular. Turkey vultures flying right at eye level. took my small dog who had no problem scrambling up the rocks

Beginning of the trail is difficult to navigate but about halfway through the trail becomes more clear. Very nice view at the top of the lake. Overall, very nice short hike !
