Hewitt-Butler Trail is a 2.3 mile heavily trafficked out and back trail located near Ringwood, New Jersey that offers the chance to see wildlife and is rated as moderate. The trail offers a number of activity options and is accessible year-round. Dogs are also able to use this trail but must be kept on leash.
Note: offline map is recommended to get oriented as there are a few turns that are not well marked. This trail is a great workout and has beautiful views all along the hike. It's rocky for the most part and has steep climbs and descents but worth it because the views at the outlook are spectacular. It's rated moderate because it’s easy in some spots and more challenging in others.
Beginning the hike at Weis Ecology Center, the trails are overloaded with signs until you get a bit into Norvin Green. Besides that, the trails were well maintained and not as busy as expected. The view at High Point was great. On the way back to Weis Ecology there was a lot of ice on the trail unexpectedly... I wish I had micro spikes for that part.
beautiful hike. we did clockwise and was good. the distance is more like 9 miles. we took a shortcut and even then it was about 8 miles.
What’s not to love?? Several waterfalls, many places to sit near a large stream, multiple scenic overlooks, interesting terrain that gives you a good workout without completely exhausting you! And bonus, no road noise! You’ll need the app because not every section is perfectly marked. And there are a lot of places where you’ll need to hop across tiny trickling streams on logs or rocks. If your balance is poor be prepared for wet feet. I’ll hike this trail again and again.
Would highly recommend recording your hike so you can follow the alltrails map and not get lost we only made 2 wrong turns but fixed our mistake very quickly because we had the map as guidance hike was nice a few over looks and plenty of areas to get your heart rate up with the steep incline took us 2 hours and 24 minutes I started the map recording a little later
Some blowdown and definitely need Alltrails to guide you because you change trails a lot, but great workout and beautiful views the whole way!
Carris hill was a steep climb...apart from that, some really spectacular views from the scenic spot!
Nice hike, goal was to get to High Point from Weis parking lot area. Markers were difficult to see at times and took a wrong turn in the beginning. Steep and rocky inclines at some points, so walking sticks may be helpful for hikers who need assistance . Great opportunities to see beautiful fungi and small creatures (we ran into chipmunks, a lizard, a snake, and various spiders - all harmless). It’s best to go on off-peak days and times during COVID as social distancing can be difficult on some parts of the trail due to narrow paths. Great for a short hike of moderate difficulty.
