My ideal nature walk definitely doesn't consist of construction noises in the distance. it's nice land but a big majority of the trail is walking alongside a landfill

Tree shaded, small rocks, with wooded walkways. Very quiet.

Very short walk, but scenic and pretty nonetheless!

Some rocky areas but they are like a pavement/pathway of rocks, very small. And the trail is defined and manmade. Beautiful and peaceful views!!

Surprisingly well maintained clean short hike. A little slippery with the 4 inches of snow. Very good ecological markers along the trail. Can't wait until spring when the frogs come out as it is loaded with shallow vernal pools. Excellent for bird watching.

Nature trips

As a nature trip, this is probably a really awesome place to visit in the spring/summer/fall. Easy walk around loop. Looking forward to planned expansions. Given its setting, it was a welcome nature break from the surrounding industrial refineries and Interstate 1-9.

Hawk Rise Sanctuary is a wildlife refuge converted from an old closed landfill. There is a kiosk at the trailhead detailing the current trail as well as planned expansions. There are also geocaches sprinkled throughout. Most of the trail is boardwalk with gravel paths in between. The southern path follows along the side of an old landfill mound, leading to a small enclosed dock/platform that has a nice view of the Rahway River, overlooking Carteret. During our walk we spotted several different birds as well as a small deer.
