Getting There

The Delaware and Raritan Feeder Canal itself doesn't extend far above Bulls Island but the bike trail covers the entire distance along converted rail line, meaning the grade is even and the surface is smooth. There are plenty of parking opportunities and there seems to be a picnic bench every mile or so. You can make a 17 mile loop by utilizing the bridge at Frenchtown to cross over to Uherlerstown and the pedestrian-only bridge at Bulls Island to join the Delaware Canal towpath on the Pennsylvania side of the river.

D&H Feeder Canal Office 609-397-2949

The Northwest terminus of the canal is at Frenchtown. The parking lot is just on the Eastern side of the bridge where Route 12 crosses the Delaware River. (lat: N40 31.523 lon: W75 03.797). There are nearby shops, stores and a bike shop. There is also parking a mile further South of Route 29 at the Kingman Boat Launch. The parking area at the Bulls Island Recreational Area is just off Route 29 three miles North of Stockton and the intersection with Route 523. (lat N40 24.650 lon: W75 02.078). The D&R Feeder Canal Office is here along with the Bulls Island campsite with trailor parking, picnit tables, flus toilets and showers. (Reservations required)

I thought it was a nice trail very easy of course because it’s easy it’s close to traffic and there’s a lot of people because of the holiday.

Not bad ... some muddy part but good 21 miles afternoon biking. U can do more miles if u continue. Looks like it’s a 40miles trail one way from Rutgers to french town, NJ some overlooking Delaware River some canals I guess

Running

I had a great run on this trail today! It’s mostly fine gravel the whole way, which was a bit challenging as a new runner who is used to pavement but it was otherwise pleasant. Very flat & shaded. It was a touch crowded, mostly with bicyclists. The trail is rather narrow so if you’re looking to have a bit of space due to covid-19 this might not be the place for you. We enjoyed take out from one of the restaurants in Frenchtown down by the parking lot afterwards, which is a nice treat after a long run!

Great trail if your looking for an easy out and back walk/hike. Pretty flat and has some nice little walk off areas that take you down to the river. Would recommend this to anyone looking to get out and enjoy nature !

Running

We really enjoyed our run! If I were to have any complaints it would be to have a bathroom/ porta potty at the parking lots. Not sure how many people are runners, but this can be an issue for some! Finished and had brunch at the Lovin Oven. Perfect adventure.

First to Review

This is another, nice stroll on an old canal towpath - more of a walk than a hike, but I suppose that depends on how far you go. It's pleasant anyway, especially away from the crowds in Frenchtown, and especially in the fall. As a multi-use trail, you'll probably run into (not literally) several bikes and dogs.
