The weather was great, and it made hiking very enjoyable. I walked 12 miles, and sometimes it was a bit challenging because the climbing is quite steep, but most of the trail is moderate. On the way back, the paved road was a bit boring, but the camp ground looked very tempting, may try it next time

about 3.5 miles of paved road among campsites, many sections of trail washed out, and much of the trail covered with small loose rocks and pebbles. campsite was amazing though!

Summer Time Day Hike: Complexity: Moderate to Hard Terrain: Its considerable elevation gain all over the trail with lots of ups and downs. so make sure you are ready for it. Sometimes it gets rocky. Shadow: You will be under the trees 95% of the time. Trekking Pole: I did without one. As there is lots of hills which you will go up and down you might need one to support. Foot Wear: I saw a lot of people running with trail runners. But make sure it has toe guards Scenic View: Round valley reservoir is one of the best breath taking water reservoir ever in NJ i think. Beautiful scenic route and do take some swimming clothes. You cannot resist. ( Not sure whether swimming is allowed though) Trail Markers: This trail goes all the way up with red trail markers. If you are taking the right side of loop you should be fine. I took the scenic route before climbing the mountain and in the middle i got lost. Managed to get back but be careful. Parking: There is a parking fee of 10$ if you live in NJ and other states 20$. There is a lot of parking space. Around 25+ Permit: N/A Animal Encounter: Did not see anything except squirrels Overall timing: Overall with lots of breaks for me and my pet we took around 6 hours to complete the trail. Streams : You are always close to the lake. But elevation gain can be tiring so make sure you take enough. Traffic: Saw lots of hikers and trail runners Campsites: Lots of alloted dispersed camp sites and picnic areas around the lake, I even saw people fishing and picnicing Pet: Take plenty of water, its will be very tiresome for your little one. Need to be leashed. He gave up even couple of times because of the elevation gain.

Unexpectedly challenging terrain! Making a 4 mile hike feel much longer.

Came in through Pickel Park. Went left at the power lines and found a wide trail (road) leading up the mountain. Very Steep... brought us along the ridge and down to campground around site 46 near the pavilion. Followed the camp path to the southern parking lot where we exited.

Decent trail, easy to follow. Pretty boring with limited views and no defined "peak." Good for a casual nature walk

6 miles is a good healthy hike with couple of steep climbs. Close to home. So finish and you can get home.

Entered from the South Lot (right after main gate, then 1st lot on right). Traveled counter-clockwise around the reservoir. Only made it to start of Campground trail, about 3+ mi. before turning back as it was hot, humid and my Swissie girl was dragging. While we had water, my beastie needed a lot so we paused several times to quench her. It's a very shady trail so the impact of the sun is muted, however it was still HOT! Here are some tips if you have the same big dog issues: immediately after the open area where the man-made earthened ridge is to your left, road to your right, is a reservoir overflow "creek". The right side is clean (no muck) and you can give a drink there. This is in the middle of the most rigorous part of the trail--up & down, some steeps--so a good spot for a break. After that, you go to one of the highest points before descending to the start of the Campground Trail where you all can jump in the water.

This is a beautiful area to hike, but be weary of the upper white trail as it is not well marked and it's easy to wander off the path. The $20 entry fee (holiday weekend) was very steep, but the views were worth it. The main red blazed trail (Cushentunk Trail) is an easy trail in my opinion with gentle elevation changes. The high side of the white trail gets a little more technical with some rock scrambling.

Did this hike with my dog for the first time and she loved it. The hike wraps around the entire lake so the down side is if you don't have it in you to hike 20+ miles you'll have to head back the way you came. Other than that the lake is gorgeous, and there are a ton of spots to stop and enjoy the water.

I think is a really good trail for bikes BUT if you're an expert at that cause Im actually a beginner and was extremely hard and exhausting for me I've been at Six mile run and I thought maybe Im ready for this but NOPE not yet 2.5 miles in the red trail and i was done already Had to take the road to get back at the parking lot cause to tired Definitely going again when I get in better shape and more experienced

There was a $10.00 fee to enter the park. Just turned around and found a free trail.

If you're looking for a place solely for hiking, and a trail where you feel like you've gotten away from civilization, then Round Valley is not the ideal place. For the first 3-4 miles, you're never far away from main roads or houses. Round Valley is also a popular place for mountain bikers, so again you don't really feel away from it all. With that said, if you're looking for a place in NJ for an overnighter where you can pitch up a tent, get a campfire going (with plenty of fallen wood), and where the campsites are decently separated, then Round Valley is actually quite nice for that. Plus many of the campsites are within a stones throw of the reservoir which makes for a nice setting. So I'd say 3 stars for hiking, but maybe 4 stars for camping.
