Dry out there. Good workout. Started late. So, we took a shorter loop back down from the top.

A little windy out today but beautiful and quiet. The lake was appropriately choppy in the wind but was a wonderful shade of blue against the fields of grass between the reservoir and the forest. Really fun hike!

Too buggy and extremely overgrown, my friend got bit with something and we still have no idea what. Probably a better hike in the fall or winter.

Trail was a bit overgrown and there were not many views. It was a nice little hike, however, and I would do it again :)

I didn't follow the exact course shown on the All Trails map, but very close (.5 less distance but 100 feet more elevation), and I've hiked the various trails in the Cushetunk Preserve many times, so I can give you a rundown if you've never been there. In the winter the views of the reservoir are nice from the ridge trail, but in the summer you can't see much (or anything) through the dense foliage. It's also extremely buggy this time of year (July). On the other hand, if you want to push your cardio, this is a great location. The trails are steep, and there are a lot of ups and downs, depending on the course you mix-and-match for yourself. I skipped the two steepest sections today and still picked up almost 1000 feet. Not bad for a hike in central NJ. There are rocky parts, but compared to other preserves in the area, there's a higher ratio of soil to rock on the trails. If you're an athlete, it could be a nice option for cross training. The trail markings are pretty good for the most part. I've never gotten lost, though a couple of the junctions might be confusing if you don't have a map handy. Note: no bathroom or port-a-john in the parking lot. Also, the lot fills up early on the weekends.

Pretty good for Central NJ. No views but a nice forested hike. Steady elevation gain at the beginning and then mostly flat or decline after that. Good view of the reservoir halfway through. Overgrown in some parts but overall easy to follow. Would definitely come back to this area.

I don’t get all the three stars. For NJ this was a good trail with a good workout near the top. Nice views in early spring before the leaves come out.
