This is probably the hardest trail going up Mount Monadnock. Getting there you will need to hike the Birchcroft Trail which is pretty standard- nothing too difficult. Be aware that there’s potential to get lost when you reach the crossroads for the Cascade Link. You will want to continue to go up, don’t take a left down the Cascade Link. When you travel up for a hundred yards there will be another set of crossroads you will want to take a right. You will travel about 0.2 miles till you reach the Spellman Trail then take a left. First impression is that this trail is quite daunting. But once you get in the rhythm of the trail it’s actually quite fun. This is a great trail for someone first time rock scrambling. It’s steep but not really that difficult. So if you like a challenge this is the trail for you. Do not descend this trail take the White Dot trail instead, much easier.

A challenge in a few spots due to my fear of heights on big rock faces but worth the hike. Beautiful!

Vastly underrated trail ascending Monadnock and one that offers a rewarding mix of trail hike, rock scramble and breathtaking views. Very manageable in terms of time but there are stretches of fairly rigorous climbing followed by more moderate terrain. The final twenty minutes of almost total rock face ascension is the payoff of the entire route and one that offers a panorama of great vistas to behold. Never gets old!

Short but sweet. Very steep with a lot of good climbing and scrambling. Taking the Cascade Link to Spellman and then Pumpelly up to the summit is a nice way to go that bypasses a lot of the crowds.

One of my favorite winter routes! Challenging and beautiful no matter the weather. With the crazy 2016 winter weather, only spikes were necessary as I tested my new mountaineering boots. This day was the most calm day I have ever had on Monadnock, no wind in January! Up Spellman, across Pumpelly to the peak and then ran down White Dot! Great day with Great Friends!
