Hiking

This is a quick, fun hike but it’s nicer in the winter when there are fewer people.

Beautiful trail conditions. No ice at all. No spikes needed. Slippery coming down in a few places due to water running over slab. 360 degree views. A great hike.

Mixed bag of conditions. Starting at 6:30am it was icey to hard pack conditions for the first mile. Then the trail gets steep and hard with ice, mud, and soft slippery snow conditions. Did the entire hike with macro spikes and poles. Excellent views from the ledges and summit. The decent was difficult with a light rain making real slippery in the steep sections. There is ground and rocks exposed also.

Got to the trailhead around 10:15 am and found the last remaining parking spot. Trail was packed snow to the summit and very well marked. Beautiful 360 view from both South and Middle. Temps in the high 20's and light wind at the summit which made for a great day. Didn't have the legs to go onto North Moat. Enjoyed the mini snowman we found half way down to the parking lot!

Absolutely spectacular day on the mountain. Bright blue sky, no wind, 360 degree view at the top. Warm for January too! Could probably have made the hike bare booted, but microspikes were very helpful. The packed snow trail was a little slippery, and there was an occasional ice patch. The view is absolutely spectacular. Made the hike well worth the time.

HikingGreat!

The trail was excellent. Dirt and specks of snow for the first 1.5 miles, then about an inch of crunchy snow with bits of ice. Icier closer to the top but still some bare rock as well. I stuck with yak traks and gators for the entire hike.

Decided to go all the way to Middle Moat since the ridge walk is really nice. Views are absolutely spectacular. All along the ridge. Full 360 degree views from both South and Middle Moats. We really thought this was more on the moderate side though. Can be a little slick in spots or icy in winter, but no ice today! The only thing holding it back from a full five stars is that South Moat was a little busy for our tastes. We were the only people on Middle Moat, but there was a small crowd on South Moat.

As others have said there is definitely a great 360 view from the top although if you want a really great view of Mt. Washington, you’re gonna have to go all the way to North Mountain. Trail is longer than advertised and it can get really slippery on the rocks but a decent workout and well worth it!

HikingGreat!

South Moat is a good steep hike with awesome views, but adding Middle makes for an even better hike. It’s not far and the views are great. The summit of Middle is very expansive and is so cool. While adding in North would be another animal altogether, adding Middle is 100% worth it.

Only able to make it to South, Middle, and part way down towards North Moat. The initial climb drained the legs in order to get up the energy to climb North. Lots of ups and downs. Looking forward to doing all 3 next time

Hiking

It's a nice hike. Parking is free. I left my car at about 12:15 PM and got back at around 5:30 PM. I hike pretty quick with minimal breaks, so take the over if Alltrails estimates 4 1/2 hours. Like a lot of hikes, the first peak was crawling with obnoxious people shouting on speaker phone. It was only about an extra 10 minutes to to the middle peak, and that was nice and peaceful with some nice views of the mountains. I had hiked Mount Cannon the week before, and would rank this as less strenuous but longer and much more remote by comparison. The trails are well maintained and well marked. It's genuinely hard to get lost here.

First 1.5 miles is a easy to moderate hike through the woods followed by a 1.2 mile uphill climb that includes some scrambling. South Moat to Middle Moat is an awesome flat hike across the bald. Awesome views.

As a hiker with little experience I rate this a solid 4 stars only because it’s a lot of work to complete (11hrs 7 min.). We did the whole ridge. Started at south and exited Diana’s Bath,9.7mi. The few vistas of Kancamagus mountain range were phenomenal !
