From Massabesic Lake to Great Bay, this trail offers pretty ponds, beautiful bridges and a shady ride in the New Hampshire forests. Due to its proximity to Manchester and the Manchester airport, this trail is one of most accessible of the wonderful New Hampshire Rail Trails. If you are flying to New Hampshire, you may very well fly into Manchester. This trail is popular year-round with biking, hiking, and running in the summer and snowmobiling in the winter. Rockingham Recreation Trail is also one of the most dog-friendly trails there is... year round. You see, in the winter, in addition to hosting nordic skiers and snowmobilers, it also is home to mushers, also known as dog sledders. In the summer, a combination of shade-filled forests and sea breezes help to make it one of the cooler trails around. In the fall, the colorful foliage can't be beat. With something to see and do the entire length of the trail, you and your family will probably visit this trail again and again.

Bring water, snacks, rain gear, insect repellent, this guide on your smart phone, and a camera. Dress in layers as the temperature can change quickly throughout the day depending on shade, sun, time of year, and proximity to water. Stop in Raymond to eat, explore the historical depot, and to restock your water. If you're going all the way from one end to the other, give yourself plenty of time to get back. Depending on trail conditions, it might take you longer than you think. With a slightly bumpy trail, a few stops, and the ever-present possibility of unexpected delays, don't overextend yourself. It's better to be safe than sorry.

Did a long walk today! Massabesic to Newfield, 25 mile stretch. Weather was 34 at the start and high 60’s at the end. Sunny skies all day. Trees provided nice shade most of the route. My first significant rail trail venture and something different from hiking the Whites or other mountainous trails. Great walk with well established footpath, saw others running and bicycling. Convenience Stores in Raymond and Epping In sight of the trail if needed. I will be checking out the other rail trails across NH now. Update: Following the completion of this 25 mile section, I stayed the night at Great Bay Camping in Newfields. Such a nice stay I felt obliged to mention them. Less than a 10 minute walk from the trailhead and tucked away well behind the convenience store / Shell station on 108. The place is just opening up for the season and we were one of the first campers....very new and clean bath house and well kept grounds. Upon returning to my vehicle near Lake Massabesic this morning, I decided to explore the first 2 miles of this rail trail that extends into Manchester. I made it 1.5 miles and almost to the 93 underpass when the flooded trail turned me back. There were some broken pallets and old tires in place to provide possible passage but I wasn't in the mood for a wet and muddy foot so just turned around. Otherwise this stretch is still nice and a bit more urban as it starts to get into Manchester.

I did Massabessic to Raymond and back, about 25 miles. Beautiful trail but struggled a bit on the return, felt like it was uphill all the way, lol. Make sure to bring plenty of water. Oh, and probably need a MTB, hybrid tires might be too skinny for some of the conditions.

Beautiful trail. Nice and wide so people can walk by each other. A couple side trails which would be nice to explore. I gave it 4 stars because walking straight with no changes in elevation or route is not exciting to me. However, we did see a Heron and Deer which was awesome!!

Access to Parking on Rt 85 but room for only 4 cars or so. Cross the road to access the trial. Trail is level dirt track shared with bicycles and horses. You sometimes will see the back yards of nearby homes but I didn''t find it disruptive.

Best running trail around, footing is good trails are easy and the views are great! Start anywhere and go out and back. Or get dropped off and picked up when going point to point.

Massages if to Chester Turnpike - going farther each trip. Some section surfaces a rocky for my hybrid bike tires. So spending much time with my eyes down on the road.

New to mountain biking, but a friend showed me around. Pretty easy main trail, unpaved. Lots of options for fire roads and single tracks all over. Always a fun ride though! Lots of nice people on the trail with dogs, kids, etc...

Easily accessible and ample parking at the trail head. Really great established trail for extended walks or bike rides. Can be buggy in the warmer months so be sure to pack bug spray.

The trail is a smooth nice trail. The only upsets are the the deer flys they were thick and bug spray didn't help. My major concern was when I got to the town of Raymond it was so trashy, the buildings you pass while on the trail were sprayed painted and the trash was mostly beer cans. I almost felt like it was a seen out of the movie Boys In The Hood. Defiantly should be like this in the beautiful State of New Hampshire. What a disgrace the town of Raymond should take more pride.
