Let me start by saying this was a great hike. The Greely pond trail is an easy 1.2 miles. When you turn onto Mt Osceola trail the grade goes up immediately. I would describe the trail as moderate to difficult. It is consistently steep but no rock scrambling. The lookout just prior to the summit of East Osceola was great. The first rime of the season was on the trees. The wind was 40mph or so with strong gusts. The ridge to East Osceola peak is surrounded by trees so you are out of the wind. East Osceola summit has a cairn and that is it. No view. From there you make you way to the infamous chimney to the summit of Osceola itself. If you get to the chimney and it's icy look to your right and you can go up the bypass (the bypass is easier to see going the other direction) ... The summit of Osceola offers 180* views which were great. I was fortunate enough that the clouds lifted after about a 15 minute wait at he summit. It revealed rim covered trees on 1/2 of each peak. The contrast was beautiful. I would definitely recommend this as a fall hike. Especially to someone looking to bag two 4,000 footers in one hike!

We went up expecting a grueling hike based on the reviews we read. It is definitely properly rated as “difficult”. Lots of boulders throughout so you have to be ready for that. The weather we got was not great (light snow, super windy, cold), but that didn’t stop us.
The chimney while definitely not for the faint of heart, was a lot easier than expected. We completed the hike in 6 hours, taking multiple breaks and enjoying the experience. It was a fun and “easy” difficult hike.

Significantly more challenging than we were expecting (read somewhere it was ranked easy/moderate) but it was a ton of fun. Not many clear views until you’re at the Mount Osceola summit but it was beautiful throughout. Very steep, rocky and challenging - favorite part was the chimney! It looked more intimidating than it was :)

The Greely Pond in & out was steep and brutal but overall a rewarding trek. The first mile is flat but that quickly changes to a progressively more difficult quad grinder as the trail separates at the first fork. From the split, you will hike up approx. 1.5 miles of HARD, relentless elevation gain that yields to a more moderate traverse into Osceola and back. There are minimal views from E Osceola. Your hard work is rewarded once you summit Osceola, as you will be greeted with panoramic views into Waterville Valley. Take your time on the descent, as there are many loose rocks and gravel.

Dogs are allowed off leash here, but due to the substantial grade of the majority of this trail and rough scrambles, I would strongly recommend against bringing your 4 legged companion.

I lost a black diamond carbon fiber hiking pole on the trail (I think it had fallen out near Osceola's summit.) If anyone finds this please contact me at joe@highlinecapitalpartners.com

I will provide a finders fee. Thank you!

This is a beautiful -- albeit objectively difficult -- trail. Not for the weak of heart/hurt of knees! There is a solid mile of scaling rocks, scrambling, even outright rock climbing. There isn't an views on the East Peak, but some great views on the way there, and on the way to the main peak -- and the views from Osceola are AMAZING. If you're in good shape, I really recommend this!

Greeley pond trail was quiet and full of greenery and babbling streams to cross. Ascending is was tough and relentless up hill with lots of boulders to manage. Good views just before the first summit. Amazing views at Osceola, but the summit was busy. The chimney was a fun scramble, not a big deal compared to the miles of vertical gains prior. Coming back down was worse. I felt this one for 3 days after.

Had a fantastic time hiking this on Thursday, perfect weather for a day hike. Like others have mentioned, the trail is steep - very easy from the start to the Greeley Ponds junction, then the vast majority of elevation gain is over the next mile and a half to East Osceola, and it doesn't let up often. Trail is in mostly good shape, a couple of the wood bridges over brook crossings have broken and one was unstable when we put pressure on it. The steepness suddenly lets up just after a short slide when you hit a false summit with some pretty solid views, then the rest of the hike up to East is pretty easy. If you've done scrambling before, the Chimney is not bad up or down, there are no technically challenging spots, just don't be careless - great fun! Views from Osceola are great, I thought it would be semi-wooded as well but it's a rocky summit with solid wide open views on half of the mountain. I would agree it's intense for a moderate hike, the elevation gain is steep and quick, but we round tripped it in about 5.5 - 6 hours. Definitely a great way to bag a couple peaks, get some good views and still have some time left in the evening!

Moderate-hard hike due to elevation gain. Trail is in good shape though, and there are multiple spots to rest with nice views. The summit is spacious with a great view. We detoured to the lower Greeley Pond on the way back down, and that was very nice as well. Overall a great hike.

Trail wasn't too busy, even on a Saturday, and very challenging. After about a third of the way up, it becomes very steep. Not much of a view from East Osceola but plenty of lookouts before. Beautiful view from top of Osceola. Chimey was fun and took alternate route to left coming down. Took us 7 hours but our pace was ok the slower side.

Did this hike with a small group of 5 and my 4.5 year old retriever mix. Conditions were about 60 degrees and overcast with periodic spurts of light rain. Started from Greeley pond trail just after 9am, reached the summit of Oseola just before noon. Views at the top were still incredible even with the clouds. Fairly chilly and windy at the top. Started our decent around 1210pm and reached the trailhead at 230pm. 5.5 hours total with several snack/view/picture breaks. There were some spots that were a bit difficult for my dog, especially due to the rain, but overall she handled the hike very well. Highly recommend this hike, its a great day trip.

Did this hike solo, and was in perfect solitude all the way up to East Osceola, with no one in sight until I reached Mount Osceola. It was definitely fun and a good workout, though there are a lot of trees for almost the entire trail. Loved the “Chimney” between East Osceola and Osceola!

Good hike, definitely has some very tough points at times but great views once you reach the top!

Climbed on New Years Eve. Steep! Cold! Nice broken out trail. One good scramble around the icy chimney. Take with caution using tree handholds. Some great views reward your efforts. Took it slow on the steep descent. Snowshoed the whole thing. Lots of blowdowns on the ridge necessitated some hands and knees to navigate. Great day! Saw only one other person out.

This was difficult for sure but what an adventure! Not prepared for the chimney based on people saying it wasn’t like rock climbing I beg to differ with that! Some really tough parts but a lot of fun at the same time. Would NOT recommend this in the spring it is a very wet trail, lots of mud and streams to cross. Would suggest fall as the best time as it’s so dense and damp you would be eaten alive in the summer by the bugs!!!

Definitely more of a hard hike than moderate, especially considering the climbs and stuff like the Chimney. Views are great, especially from Osceola, and it's a great hike for bagging two 4,000 footers.

Strongly agree, amazing hike, incredibly difficult verticles both up and down. Definitely NOT a moderate hike! A 6 hour hike, difficult/strenuous. Check your White Mountain Guide and you'll see that this hike is straight up!

This was a fun hike although I would rate it as hard not moderate! The trail starts out moderate but then becomes a very steep rock scramble that took more time to descend than to summit. If you are in reasonable fitness you can do this. There were many water crossings and lots of mud but all very doable. The "chimney" between East Osceola to Osceola was great fun going up. We took the alternate easier way to the left on the way back... I'm not sure it was really any easier than the chimney would have been. The views from the summit of Mount Osceola were amazing!
