This is an easy trail to lose. There are lots of old logging trails and rogue trails that are in better shape than the official trail. The hike is best if you stay close to the brook on the way up.

Did the loop clockwise and it was the right way for me. Shaw trail was well packed but I still used snow shoes. The last mile before hitting the bridle paths was “wicked” steep. Many snowmobiles at the top. Decided to make it a loop and descend via black snout. Sunny and nice views most of the way down

SnowshoeingGreat!Snow

Do this loop clockwise so you’re following the red trail up, then the blue and finally the Italian trail down (red and green blazes). Definitely have your map downloaded. Many of the blazes on the way up were hard to spot, but we followed in a trail that someone had broken before us. We started at 9:45am up to Mt Shaw. Summited about 1pm and then made our way over to Black Snout. All the way up and down, there was only one set of tracks ahead of us. Very hard work but so much fun! Snowshoes all the way. Got back to the car and trailhead just before 3pm.

Hiked on 1/23. Arrived at the empty parking lot at 8:45am. We were on trail by 9 starting clockwise around the loop My experience level (for reference)- I am an intermediate spring/summer/fall hiker but a very new winter hiker. This was my third winter hike. Conditions- trail was packed down. No spikes needed for first mile of the loop but are a must for the rest of the trail as there was a lot of snow and ice. Trail- the first 2 miles offer a mild incline. Its easy to feel like you’re getting off trail on this part of the hike. We had to stop twice to make sure we were heading the right direction (highly recommend referencing the AllTrails map). Mile 2-3 was the only part of this hike I would consider hard as it was a constant, very steep incline. A lot of elevation gain in a small amount of time. After the steep section it flattened out and we continued up to summit Shaw first, followed by Black Snout, and Big Ball. Overall it was a great hike! It was a beautiful (chilly) day. We saw about 5 other people total who all seemed to be doing the loop in the opposite direction. The views were gorgeous! Happy hiking!

HikingGreat!

Saturday November 28, 2020. Cloudy. Temp at Trailhead 32-45 F. Dawn start at 7AM. Slow steady climb along stream for 2-3 miles. Steeper climb thereafter for 3/4 of a mile. Ridge/carriage way subsequently to summit of Shaw and Black Snout. Panoramic views muted by cloudy/foggy weather. Exit from carriage way to Big Ball trail was not well marked. Great views at Big Ball summit and ledges downhill from there. Overall great hike. App guidance needed for not getting off trail.

The Tate Tr climbs steadily to nice views on Big Ball Mtn. The Banana Tr climbs steeply to Black Snout. The hike to Shaw is flat and wide on snowmobile trails. Coming back down on the Shaw Mtn Tr, you are treated to views of the steep valley into which you drop quite rapidly.

A beautiful summer-ish day. On trail for 5 hours total with about 4 hrs of moving time. We did the loop clockwise, hitting Shaw, Black Snout, then Big Ball. Big Ball Trail looks freshly blazed with blue. The steep descent from Black Snout on Big Ball Trail is the only area where I'd say the trail might be hard to follow, but the blazes are frequent and fresh.

Bring your GPS. a lot of folks we spoke with had lost the trail. you'll see from my recording that we did too! Great view of the inside of a cloud at the top, but at least it cleared on the way down as we hit an overlook.

Took the route clockwise which we loved, as the hike up was steeper and a bit more direct and gentler on the way down. Not many views other than the peaks, but they deliver. The walk through the forest is beautiful and serene. The app was definitely useful up to mt Shaw as the trail was hard to find at times. Overall not many people on the trail, very enjoyable!

If you hike up Italian trail it is marked great. If you head up Shaw there are markings scattered and you can lose your way. Pretty areas with waterfalls.
