As an experienced hiker, this trail was fun, quick and easy. Would not do the mountains again, 3 stars for the loop itself, but 5 for the Precipice Trail alone. Take it on the way out instead of on the way back.

I very much enjoyed this hike! There wasn’t much in the way of views (my fave parts were taking the west precipice trail up and then the hike between Mt. Klem and Mt. Mack) but I enjoyed the varied terrain and the ability to check off 5 Belknap peaks in one go (I skipped Straightback because I’d already done it)! My hike was still almost 8 miles long. I consider myself an above average hiker and this trail was moderately challenging for me. I think it would be extremely difficult for a novice.

Overall great hike if you are looking for some beautiful natural exercise. That being said, there are really only 2-3 points with a good view and they are not generally the summit.

Good loop to get some miles in; strenuous at times but that’s short lived. No sweeping views, but still a good hike! Very well marked even when switching trails so many times. Still very buggy 5/26

Amazing loop hike. Some ice and snow on the leeward side of summits, but nothing that regular hiking shoes cannot handle.

4/1/20 We planned to hike this 8.4 mile loop counterclockwise however, after we hiked up Precipice to Straightback, we missed the trail to West Quarry, following the yellow trail to Anna instead. From there we continued clockwise to Mack, Klem, Rand and W. Quarry. We cut back on the yellow trail and descended on Precipice Cliff/Waterfall. The hike ended up being 10.33 miles and took 7.25 hrs, with minimal stopping except to put on and take off microspikes, water breaks and snacks, and photo taking, actually moving time was 6.10 hrs. The steep, narrow descents slow you down. Overall, this was a good challenging hike. The mountain stream, waterfalls, scenic views and change in terrain kept it interesting. We did use microspikes for the summit to summit hiking. We encountered ice, snow, flooded areas and numerous stream crossings. It is well blazed for the most part, but we did have to refer to the all trails/gps map for guidance. Be aware that you have a trail choice to avoid the ledges to W Quarry (clockwise), however, the white blaze for either trail goes in both directions. We wanted to go on the low side but ended up on the high side by simply following the white blaze! Not sure if we missed the spur or if there really was one. Note: This hike is rated hard for several reasons. Trekking poles are beneficial. There are a few steep to very steep ascents/descents, rock scrambles and very narrow ledge waking that requires careful footing. The climb up to Rand (clockwise) was challenging but short. The ledges leading to W. Quarry (clockwise) and beyond had some narrow tricky walking. (would not recommend in wet or icy conditions) The final descent on the Precipice Cliff/Waterfall started out fairly easy/moderate but had a steep, narrow and rather difficult section 2/3 the way down before the waterfall. Check out the waterfall early in the year as I was told that the waterfall only runs in the spring, and dries up in the summer. Hike on!

First of all this was an awesome hike! The conditions were better than expected and trail was very well marked! The views and scenery was better than advertised. The only complaint...really just a heads up is that you hit 6 summits not just Mack, Kilm, and Rand. You hit Anna first and then after Rand you finish with W. Quarry and SB. This would be nice to know before heading out and just thought others would like to be aware. Would definitely recommend this trail and will be back!

This was a lot of fun! there were many beautiful sites along the way and was not heavily trafficked at all, which was awesome! the trails were very well marked and easy to follow. you can make this longer or shorter depending on how you feel.

Did the full loop at the end of August. It was really beautiful. There are a few really fabulous views, lots of blueberries, and really beautiful forest. There were a couple spots where we had to pay attention to keep an eye out for the blazes, but they were fairly well marked.
