Getting There

Although dogs are allowed in this area, users have reported that most dogs will have trouble with the scrambling portions of this route. A popular rocky traverse over a series of mountains in the Whites with terrific 360 degree views. This is one of the most popular and beautiful hikes in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. Mt. Chocorua looks like the summit of a peak you may find in the Colorado Rockies! Once you get up to the ridge via the steep ridge trail you will be following a ridge traverse over open ledges and several peaks to the rocky summit of Chocorua. From the Chocorua Summit you will have great views towards Mount Washington and the rest of the White Mountains before heading back to the parking area.

Make sure to bring good shoes for some rocky scrambles and a camera.

Take Route 16 north from the town of Chocorua until you see a White Mountain Forest hiking sign next to a convenience store on your right. Follow this dirt road until you reach the parking lot for the trailhead. It costs $3 per day to park here.

It was a little confusing after the summit, make sure you get back on the right trail for the loop. We ended up with a point to point and someone gave us a ride back. The way up was perfect.. moderate hike with seriously amazing views in peak foliage. The top was much more difficult to get to the summit and going down that area was dicey. I’m very active and athletic but don’t have a ton of mountain hiking experience, so if you hike a lot of mountains you may find it a little easier at the summit. There were a good amount of people at the summit but plenty of room for everyone to have their own piece of paradise and take photos, We really did not pass that many people on the trail

Started after 3, enough time to make the ~6 o'clock sunset, but this is NOT the ideal time to start this hike in October as it gives a shadowy view towards Chocorua from the great views at Carter Ledges and Sister summits. Slipped and slid a number if times on granite slabs within ~1 mile of summit.. Night hiking down was gradual enough to still trail run much of the way out. Summit sunset view is over the Sandwich Range but they will block the sunset from Aug-Nov and Jan-May. Solstice is ideal.

Absolutely amazing trail, we found it more on the moderate side of being technical. Went up Piper to and from.

Trail was just awesome, beautiful weather, perfect NE fall colors (despite the early peak this year) and there’s plenty of fun terrain to tackle. We took the carter ledge side of things up to middle sister first and then went on to summit. Glad we did that because the trail was absolutely packed. As soon as we were off the first summit we were running into hikers in droves. Granted we hiked on Columbus Day weekend so what can you expect!! Be ready for some serious scrambling.

HikingGreat!Scramble

Trail was absolutely gorgeous. There are many areas where you have to scramble which is important to know. Also in the wet it would be more challenging and dangerous in spots. Day was absolutely beautiful sunshine and the wind was low so the ridge line and summits were great to enjoy.

My review isn't for the full loop because we accidentally took Piper Trail all the way to the summit- oops! This took about 1.5 miles off the round trip. Pay attention to the waypoints listed here for the correct trail junctions. We'll be back to do the full loop! Absolutely gorgeous summit views.

An enjoyable mix of terrain, fun scrambles, and great views. Trails weren't too busy given how packed the summit was. Fun hike!

Beautiful hike- went counterclockwise. One rock scramble makes you feel alive! Busy at the summit- trails had less people the further you were from the top. Views were phenomenal

HikingGreat!

Get on this trail now! Views are beautiful. Definitely go up counter clock wise. It’s a long hike, took just over 6 hours. Nothing too strenuous though. Lots & lots of people at the summit so be careful if trying to distance yourself. However the trail was pretty quiet.

Definitely more bouldering than I anticipated and very difficult in several spots. We made it almost to the top but there were gale force winds and I was concerned I’d lose a few kids off the face if we went all the way. But the views were beautiful.

Counter clockwise is the only way unless you are bringing climbing gear. One spot going up wouldn’t be possible in any moist conditions as you are going across rock face with no safety. Trail is actually more like 11 miles, but well worth every step. 6:15 total time with about 5:30 moving tome . Views going up and at the top are amazing!!!

It was an awesome trail with incredible views. I would definitely recommend going earlier to beat the crowds. I was the only one in the lot at 7:30 but when I came down at 12:30 it was packed
