Getting There

Although dogs are allowed in this area, users have reported that most dogs will have trouble with the scrambling portions of this route. A popular rocky traverse over a series of mountains in the Whites with terrific 360 degree views. This is one of the most popular and beautiful hikes in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. Mt. Chocorua looks like the summit of a peak you may find in the Colorado Rockies! Once you get up to the ridge via the steep ridge trail you will be following a ridge traverse over open ledges and several peaks to the rocky summit of Chocorua. From the Chocorua Summit you will have great views towards Mount Washington and the rest of the White Mountains before heading back to the parking area.

Make sure to bring good shoes for some rocky scrambles and a camera.

Take Route 16 north from the town of Chocorua until you see a White Mountain Forest hiking sign next to a convenience store on your right. Follow this dirt road until you reach the parking lot for the trailhead. It costs $3 per day to park here.

Great hike! There was a steady increase of elevation, but nothing too challenging. Make sure to keep your eyes peeled for the yellow markers-- I missed them at the top and kind of scrambled up the rocks and then on the way back down, I botched the river crossing because I didn't look up to see the yellow markers. Overall a wonderful time

Very hard is strenuous but an amazing 360 degree view. Once you get about the tree line the trail markers are faded. Not very buggy at all and I wouldn’t bring a dog. Watch a couple of families trying to convince their dog to jump down. Stopped at the lake to rinse off. So very nice.

This hike was a lot of fun! The entire ridge offers lovely views, but the highlight was the scrambling section near the summit. There's the option to take the main path, which is fairly mellow, or you can choose your own adventure to find your way to the top. The summit was packed on this particular Saturday, but most of this route was lightly traveled. Took about 4:30 including breaks. The lot was nearly full when I pulled in at 9 AM. Also, FYI, there's an outhouse in the parking lot. Make sure to have $5 in exact change ready to go, too.

Loved this hike! Consistently steap throughout the whole hike so its a great physical challenge without requiring any hiking gear. Amazing 360° view at the top and well worth it. Not crowded at all.

Challenging and rewarding 9m loop. I went counter clockwise and would recommend.

Tough trail! We did this on a really hot and muggy day, which definitely added to the difficulty. Took us 6 hours total, about 5:20 moving time (stopped to snack and then later for lunch). Decently buggy, would recommend bug spray. You get great views of the mountain coming up the ridge and then the panorama at the summit is amazing. Long and tough but definitely recommend!

beautiful day to do this hike with nearly clear skies and little mud. it was buggy toward the bottom but less so as the hike went on. the higher up, the steeper it becomes, with scrambling at the top. there were not too many people until we reached closer to the top, even on Sunday of 4th of July weekend! i didn't bring my dog because supposedly the scramble would have been too hard, but in hindsight, i wish i did - it was very doable for him. we completed this in 5.25 hours with a 30 minute stop for lunch- not experienced hikers but young people in good shape!

Cloudy day to start with, trail became slippery later as clouds became dense. Could not take nice 360 pictures, all are with clouds..

Went two weeks ago, gorgeous view at the top! Haven’t hiked for awhile which made it a kinda difficult hike but definitely doable. Bug spray is recommended.
