Mount Avalon is a 3.4 mile heavily trafficked out and back trail located near Bretton Woods, New Hampshire that features a great forest setting and is rated as moderate. The trail is primarily used for hiking, running, and snowshoeing and is accessible year-round. Dogs are also able to use this trail but must be kept on leash.
Spikes and trekking pokes are highly recommended.
2/22/21 - I was the only person on the trail. The trail was packed so I wore spikes. If you step off the packed trail you'll easily sink in up to your waste. The last .7 or so miles is tough, especially in the snow. I'd like to hike it in the summer to see how that grade feels without the snow. The summit was socked in so that was a little disappointing but it was snowing the entire time so not surprising. I'd hike this again and I'd like to pair it with Tom, Field, and Willey.
Trails were great! You need snowshoes because the trail is not packed down. Last half mile is very steep, and did not have enough time to get to the top
The hike itself was great! Definitely steep and slippery in the last 0.5 miles as others say, we managed with just some micro spikes but would bring poles next time. Only half of the other hikers were wearing masks which was wildly disappointing...guess it is the Saturday before MA school vacay tho...
Broke trail after Tuesday's snow storm. The first mile is great, one river crossing and runnable. I have never done this trail in winter and I forgot just how steep that last. 5 mile is. Whoa! I slid down most of that section on the descent but had my 8 month old puppy which made things interesting. He had a much easier time than I. Overall good day, cloudy so no view.
Nice easy packed trail. No view today but still a beautiful snowy hike!
a very steep trail! I slid on my but for 0.5 mile , very quick descent! but definitely worth the effort to get up this short hike, the views of the northern presidentials and Crawford notch are spectacular.
Did this trail on Sunday 1/10 and it was so beautiful — all the trees are covered in snow and it creates a surreal, winter wonderland up there. Not a ton of people, either, so you have the peaceful quiet all to yourself. The trail is a great workout as it gets pretty steep towards the summit — you need micro spikes for sure. The view at the top is spectacular and bonus: there are lots of fun parts to slide down on your bum! We loved it.
This was so fun! Super crazy icy for about half a mile at the top. Spikes would’ve been much easier but we did it without fine as well. The dog had a hard time and a serious fall risk. Would leave him home next time. Other than that, it was an awesome and challenging hike!
Great Views! Easy to follow. Pretty steep in some areas. Would be 5 stars if it was a loop.
Very wet and muddy due to the 4-5 days of near 70s. Stream/River crossings were easy. Last half mile WAS NOT-- Steep and all boulders toward the top. There is a left turn about 3/4s of the way up that is easy to miss (I did and a group on my way down did the same thing). Beautiful views at the top!
A nice quick hike for the area, some challenges due to a decent amount of ice but crampons on the way down made it easy...beautiful views at the top. Took us 2 hours and 40 minutes, would’ve shaved off around 30 minutes if there was no ice. Will definitely do in summer again sometime so we can do Mt Field as well (only an extra 2 miles to add that peak)
