We were blessed with perfect weather on Friday the 13th for this hike. Our little family completed this together (kids 12 and 9). The rocks were rough on our feet but the views didn’t disappoint. We had 110 miles of visibility the entire day.

Just did this hike with Boy two days ago in the reverse direction. What made this hike so difficult was traversing over huge boulders and rock piles. A rich and diverse plant life throughout and a lot of incredible views of the valleys between the Presidentials.

One of the hardest things I have ever done but I made it! What a feeling of accomplishment.

Definitely a bucket list hike in these conditions. .June 30th - 6 hours of thunder and lightening - rain, sleet and small hail. 30 - 40 sustained winds with gusts recorded between 50 - 70 mph. Be prepared for any weather. Even escape/bail out trails could be dangerous. Madison Hut attendant said not take Great Gully to bail, still snow. And Sphynx is on the "terrifying 25" list. Just do your homework. Didn't hut this though. But...can still refill water, use bathroom, or get some shelter even without reservations. For a small fee, grab a snack or a cup of hot tea. (cash only) Before approaching hut area, tented in Valley Way tentsite first day, right below Mt. Madison. So despite torrential downpours all night, stayed dry with nice flat, smooth rockless sites. Easy ready made bear bag area with 2 hang lines made it easy and quick to hang food. A spring for water although refills are available at Madison Hut a mile up the trail.

We parked at Appalachia, took air line to Madison Spring hut, next day worked our way up Mt Adams and took Gulfside down to Lake of the Clouds hut. Very hard, be prepared for wind, rain, thunderstorms, and hail. Lots of mountain climbing and scrambling from rock to rock, sometimes in the very edge of a several hundred foot drop. We had a sunny day, still got hit with two hailstorms, and be the time we traversed around Mt Washington had 50 mph winds with gusts to 80. Well worth the experience and views. Next day headed our Crawford to Mizpah hut. Slightly easier hike with equally impressive views.
