Steep trail, the first 3/4 is nearly 45° incline switchbacks, yet it levels out nicely toward the lake. Trails to, and around, the lake are well-packed and so far not very icy, so they could be accomplished with just microspikes. Make sure to stop at the hut, and do some of the surrounding trails, while you're there.

Great trail, well packed snow. Heavily trafficked. You can walk across the lake this time of year. Recommend snow shoes or microspikes but saw a few folks in regular boots. Most everyone else had snow shoes.

Always a great hike. Walked across the lake to the hut, however, one portion seemed slushy so any warm temperatures and I wouldn’t recommend it. But I do highly recommend bringing a small sled for the way down.

Would be a difficult rated hike if not for short distance - getting to the lake is awesome in the winter! Cool views; and the hut is awesome!

Very nice hike, snow is packed down well as the trail is heavily trafficked. Lake is frozen over (from what it seemed) so we walked across the lake to get to the cabin!

Excellent. Bring water and food. Crampons or snowshoes are helpful. The hut is fully equipped.

Trail was well packed and icy in most locations. Micro spikes required. Lake and views shrouded in fog. Check out the snowman on the lake...

Trail was well packed. Wore micro spikes and was fine. I walked around the lake, although some people walked right across the frozen lake. Clear trails. Great hike. Parking lot was very icy.

Beautiful day to be out on the trails. Lonesome Lake Trail is well packed from the parking lot to the hut and all the way around the lake. Used spikes the whole time - we did see a few people using snowshoes and a couple people barebooting. We also saw a few people crossing the lake, though we did not today. Lafayette Place parking lot was very icy. Hut was open today and we purchased some delicious Christmas Spice Cake and cocoa - thank you to the caretaker!

Started along the Lonesome Lake trail until the hut. Then proceeded the rest of the way up until the Kinsman ridge trail. There was a lot of snow and microspikes will not do the job here, crampons are recommend. It's a pretty steep and slippery ascent up. We got to the observation tower headed towards the rest of the ridge, but the snow got waist deep and we didn't have snow shoes to proceed further. Had to turn back and take the same trail back down, it was a steep descent. Be prepared if you decide to do the full loop. Bring extra layers, snowshoes, crampons and start your day early.

11/29/19: went to the hut and back. Trail is pretty well packed - started with boots only, then put on spikes at the switchback and kept them on for the rest of the climb and for the way down.
