The hike starts with a stroll past an old secure military area with a sign stating 'Former Weapons Storage Facility'. It then follows an old path down into a lovely broad field and eventually reaches Great Bay. There you will find an observation platform for view the bay. The road is well maintained. It can be slightly muddy after a rain. Please note: Bikes and dogs are not allowed.

A beautiful spot to see Great Bay, wildlife, and get out into nature close to busy Portsmouth

Baby red squirrels are running all over the place. I counted ten, along with six adults. Only saw four grays (that's for both sides of the refuge) and of course chipmunks are everywhere. Also saw a Barred Owl along the North side of the "boardwalk" as it was maybe considering those chattering, baby red squirrels as an afternoon snack. I've attached a few photos.

Nice easy hike. Clear wide trail. Well marked, ample parking. Pretty enough. No water (legal) access.

I was stationed here in the 80s and its always kept its beauty. A wonderful trail that affords very rare photos if you sit still for a few minutes and let the tide of nature rise back up all around you. Also the perfect skill level for grandkids.

Decent walk, 3 wild turkeys and one major bug bite. Views quite obstructed.

Easy walk. Have done it many times. Good for birding, watching beavers swimming in the pond, wild turkeys ambling by.

A great spot for looky-loos or people with kids as the board walk makes for easy access to the area. Dont bother hiking here though; its more like a Disney theme park than the forest God intended for hikers..plastic superficial and completly off limits to any foot travel

This is my favorite "go to" trail. There is ample parking, public restrooms, picnic tables and trash receptacles. Two trails are available. One trail is .5 miles long, plank board (elevated) trail with water views and benches. The other is a longer - moderate - trail with views of ponds, Great Bay and fields. The longer trail can be soggy and buggy at times. The part of the trail that is wooden tends to attract the most bugs ... and owls. - Today there was a flock of wild turkeys in the field.

This is a great trail that my family and I use frequently. It can be a bit buggy, so be sure to bring bug spray for the mosquitoes and black flies and check for ticks after you finish the loop. on many occasions, we have seen great blue herons and snowy egrets in the tall grass that lines the trail, especially near the pond to the left of the trail after the old air force base section.

This is a very easy hike that I would highly recommend to families. Essentially, it is a very nice walk through some very beautiful natural areas until you come to the picturesque Great Bay.

This is a VERY pretty trail that takes you from behind the old air force base to the great bay. It's a short easy hike through the woods, some local wildlife, and soon the old bomb storage area will be reclaimed and will likely be even more pretty. Bring your DEET, there are some Mosquitos and black flies when the flood ponds form, but it was pretty minimal.

Very nice trail shared with local wildlife. Some hills but nothing to bad. Has signs along the way to help understand the different environments as you pass through them.
