Getting There

The hike starts with a stroll past an old secure military area with a sign stating 'Former Weapons Storage Facility'. It then follows an old path down into a lovely broad field and eventually reaches Great Bay. There you will find an observation platform for view the bay. The road is well maintained. It can be slightly muddy after a rain. Please note: Bikes and dogs are not allowed.

From Route 16 aka Spaulding Turnpike in Portsmouth get off at the Pease AFB exit. Enter the old air base and bear right to reach to reach Arboretum Drive following the brown signs to the Great Bay National Refuge. It is about 3 miles or so from the entrance.

I don’t know why this is rated as moderate. It’s a wide path with not too much elevation. Good for kids. NO Dogs.

This is a lovely short loop very close to Portsmouth and Dover. It's more a walk than a hike, although waterproof boots or shoes are often useful. There's a great overlook of the Great Bay Estuary. Parking is ample and there are restrooms (although they've been closed due to covid-19 while I've been going there). Be sure to leave your dog at home as they are not allowed (it's a wildlife sanctuary).

There was a lot of poison ivy on the edge of the trails and in the fields. Great hike to do with kids.

Nothing too exciting, but a great evening walk. My two 20 month olds did great walking the majority of this trail.

Did the trail with 8 and 9 years old kid. perfect Sunday afternoon trail. not too much traffic. The trail was muddy at times but nothing impossible to go through. Flat most of the time.

Beautiful view of Great Bay. Remember to leave your dog at home because it is a wildlife preserve! The wild animals are more important than Scruffy.

Why on earth is a well behaved dog on a leash not allowed to join you on that trail :-(

Depending on your athleticism, age, and any disabilities, this is a Moderat trail. There are inclined, declines, and some room across the trail. There were some of the parts that I was able to walk around. It was a perfect Birdsong detox after a 4 Hour Dr. to Portsmouth. There is an easy trail to the left of the welcome center. That is raised and disabled accessible.

Decent trails though very wet after winter. Many areas should not be opened yet. However, great walk overall. I would say this is an easy set of trails, not moderate.

This was a nice trail to walk. The waterview was pleasant. Spotted a couple toms and a doe. Unfortunately picked up multiple ticks also so do a thorough tick check when your done.
