Lafayette campground parking was full, so had to park at The Basin. Cascade brook trail is not in great shape currently. Didn’t need microspikes until 1/4 way through Fishin’ Jimmy Trail. Snow is packed in, but trail is thin and not well-defined at certain parts. Weather was great and not much snow at summit of both peaks. Overall took me about 8 hours.

I stayed overnight in Kinsman Pond Tentsite, really nice shelter. No fires allowed though. The water source is Kinsman Pond, if the pond is frozen over you'll want to pack some extra water in. Kinsman Pond Trail, which cuts from Kinsman Pond Tentsite back to Cascade Brook Trail, hadn't really been broken of snow when I went. A bunch of that trail runs over the bed of a stream. I actually filled my bottles though a 2 foot posthole into the water below the trail. And then I decided return back the way I came (via Lonesome Lake, adds about 2 miles to this trip). There were 2 crossings of Pemi River on the way up, and 2 crossings of Cascade Brook (bridge has been out for years) on the way down. I couldn't find a way to rock hop across the Pemi and ended up making peace with soaked feet. Consider taking Basin Cascades trail up instead of just down: it's nicer and shorter and your feet stay dry. Cascade Brook Trail has beautiful waterfalls and was rock hoppable. But these rivers are no joke this time of year, so be smart and safe. Remember to face upstream when fording, use poles, link arms, question life choices, have the time of your life, don't die, rinse, repeat.
