Black Mountain Trail is a 2.3 mile moderately trafficked out and back trail located near Jackson, New Hampshire that features beautiful wild flowers and is rated as moderate. The trail offers a number of activity options and is accessible year-round. Dogs are also able to use this trail but must be kept on leash.
We hiked the ski trail with micro spikes and poles. It was a partly cloudy day, but Washington was visible from the Cabin. The trail on the way up was rather packed. theres a icy rain mixture that then turns to snow crusted over 18+/- inches of powder. I saw a couple of skiiers coming down, but its slick on worn spots. The trail around the right side (east pasture ski trail) was not as packed and more likey to sink. Beautiful tree bark!
A little bit of everything - mud, water, slippery leaves, rocks, grass, pine forest, snow, ice....but nothing that would slow you down or require special equipment. The view of Mt. Washington from the cabin is excellent but summit views are nothing special. Recent rain filled all the streams we crossed have that beautiful gurgling sound.
Fun hike overall. View at true summit is lacking due to tree growth. Some carefully pruned trees would make all the difference. Will check out sometime in winter as ski trail.
Trail was uninteresting, just a steady uphill walk, lower end with many small rocks which caused loose footing. The loop from the summit on the East Pasture Trail was well worth it, deep hemlock forest and soft underfoot.
I’m a 57-year old Midwesterner, in decent shape, so this was a good indicator of what I can and can’t do before moving on to better trails. This is strictly wooded trail and a few creeks with no views except a brief one at the cabin site. It’s somewhat steep in spots (I had to stop and breathe a few times), and a couple of lightly muddied spots with moderately buggy spots nearby. The cabin, as stated by others, needs a trim at the few stone stairs leading up to it. It was probably the worst part of the trail since it was hard to see where your foot was landing.
great Trail! Somewhat steep on the way up and challenging on the way back down but it's a nice afternoon hike with a great perspective on Mount Washington
I never write a bad review because a hike is a hike BUT this one was pretty boring. Approaching the summit it is very overgrown. The cabin at the top looks sketchy (especially solo hiking) while approaching because you can’t quite see it over the overgrowth.
Uphill the whole time at a constant grade. Natural stair case. View from cabin worth it but agreed that they could cut down some trees to improve it. Did it while raining and the tree canopy kept us more or less dry, which was nice
