Basin and Hermit Falls Trail is a 2.6 mile moderately trafficked out and back trail located near Center Conway, New Hampshire that features beautiful wild flowers and is rated as moderate. The trail offers a number of activity options and is best used from April until September. Dogs are also able to use this trail but must be kept on leash.
Hermit Falls is tucked a mile northwest of the Basin Campground, which is operated by the U.S. Forest Service. A seasonal waterfall, the best time to visit this waterfall is between mid-May and early July, or after a substantial rainstorm. In high water conditions, Hermit Falls is a pretty 30-foot horsetail within a remote, moss-surrounded ravine. In low-water, the falls turns into a powerless slide down dark wet rock.
The Basin is absolutely gorgeous. Bring a lunch and enjoy the views from a picnic table. The trail to Hermit Falls is easy to find and is overall pretty varied. Sometimes flat and easy, sometimes with a lot of rocks and roots. A bit muddy in places too. The falls are nice; I imagine this must look amazing in the spring.
Connected a few trails to make a loop from Brickett Place. Walked to the Basin Rim Trail then West Royce Trail and back to the car by Royce Trail. The descent from West Royce was very steep. The section along the river is lovely. Stopped for a swim at one spot. All and all, a challenging loop.
Very nice trail from the beautiful Basin to Hermit Falls. Spotted several garter snakes in the trail along the way. Thankfully, the ATs app notified us when we missed a water crossing, keeping us on course!
Easy hike, very nice forest and lake vistas. The falls were dry in October. Poor signage, but it is not easy to miss the direction
