We parked right next to the closed fired road. You follow that road for about 1.45 miles and the you will see a trail marker to your right to take you off the fire road. There is a beautiful vista point just a little ways up from there that is amazing! If you would prefer to park in a lot castle rock trail parking with bathrooms is just a little ways up and you can fall into this trail very easily but you would miss the vista point. We just hiked in and did the castle rock loop off of TRT and it was a great little hike about 5.6 miles.

Just hiked a portion of this trail today. Lots of snow and as we passed the trail to Kingsbury south the snow was way too deep to walk without snowshoes! You can access Castle Rock no problem. Wanted to go all the way to end of this recommended trail but will wait until the snow melts. However, it was an incredible day of hiking with clear skies, gorgeous views and complete quiet! Worth it even with the snow.

i agree with the other reviewers that the parking area all trails sends you too isnt really a parking area. I suggest parking at 466 Andria Drive, this is a nice parking area with bathrooms, you can take the trail down to the Castle Rock/Tahoe Rim trail split and choose where to go from there. I only hiked about 6 miles of the TRT but found it to be just spectacular. It is a bit confusing because at first you are walking down a dirt path that looks like is used for vehicles, then you will see a hiking path marker about a half a mile in on the right (that you cant read anyways because the writing is faded). Take that path and keep track of your turns because nothing is marked until about 2 miles or so in, then you will finally see a Tahoe Rim trail marker. The markers are very sporadic, so dont rely on them. the path is well worn, just follow the footsteps or bike tracks in the areas that may be a little confusing. Listen out for bikes because there are some blind turns. I very much enjoyed this hike, the views were amazing and it was fairly quiet. I hikes for a little over an hour and saw about 12 people, other hikers and quite a few mountain bikers. Everyone was courtious and I never felt unsafe. I picked up a couple peices of trash along the way.

Nice hike. We did 3 miles out and then detoured up Castle Rock on the way back. That detour is well worth doing. Great views. Didn’t like the steep sandy climb at the start of the hike though!

We hiked this trail up to the Castle Rock trail to some amazing views at Castle Rock. We had the trail to ourselves at 11am but by 130, there were a fair amount of hikers. Lots of good vistas of Tahoe and mountains beyond. Ice only in small parts, we handled it fine in hiking boots.

Running

This was a gorgeous trail for running - I'm a beginning trail runner and really enjoyed it. I started started around 830 AM at the crossroad and was a bit confused at first since it kind of looks like private property and is not marked as a trail head. There is a small stretch of gravel where I parked - if it was crowded, there wouldn't be more than 4 spaces there. However, I didn't see anyone on this trail the whole time I was out, ~1 hour (I didn't do the whole thing). The trail is a lovely mix of landscapes - towering trees, big rock formations, and sweeping views of Lake Tahoe - and had rolling ups and downs that were pretty easy on the knees (except for a steep climb at the start). The only thing that made me a little nervous was how deserted the trail was. I know that's exactly what a lot of people are looking for but I'm unfamiliar with typical wildlife of the surrounding area and felt like some of the landscape looked like it could be home to some bigger animals. I would have felt more comfortable with at least one more running buddy and a bit more knowledge about what to expect in the area. However, I didn't see anything and had such a great morning run experience - enjoy!

A great, smooth, easy trail with incredible views, meandering meadows, beautiful wildflowers, fun rock features, and was sparsely travelled when we were on it. Great hike for those with knee problems because there are next to no steps, just smooth trails.

The woods are pretty but this hike was boring and there wasn't a great view at the end... no payoff. There were a million mosquitoes too.
