A demanding backcounty extension off the popular Calico Tanks trail to the summit of Redcap Peak. Aka: Turtlehead Jr. Calico Hills is a grouping of colorful sandstone formations north of the entrance to the Scenic Loop Road. Popular with hikers, scramblers, and climbers this beautiful area offers almost unlimited routes for all skill levels. Of all the twisting canyons and rounded peaks waiting to be explored, only Redcap is considered a ranked peak (Rise of +360'). A demanding (two class 3+ moves) backcountry extension off the popular Calico Tanks trail to arrive at the summit. This peak is also known as Turtlehead Jr. $7 entrance fee

Amazing view from the top

Short hike with a fun scramble to the summit of Red Cap (eastern summit). Scramble is pretty mellow. The class 3 moves aren’t scary compared to some I’ve done.

Great trail! Did it twice now and kept going off trail. So we reached the summit a bit off to the side. Definitely wanna come back and give more time to try to stick to the actual trail from the map!

My favorite spot in RRC. Once you leave the Calico trail it’s just you and the mountain, beautiful slots, and views all around.

Interesting hike but because I was alone I didn't go very far on the scrambling section but did get high enough for a nice view of the area

Great hike. Easy to follow. Steep scramble up from Calico Tanks Trail (there is a more gradual route one could take). If you don't fancy the final class 3+ moves then go up the giant's staircase to Redcap East avoiding exposure. (There are 2 peaks of almost equal elevation just 30 yards apart.). Also while up at the top of the white sandstone, you can visit some nice tanks/tinayas and get a closer view of Vegas.

Short and to the point type of hike. It was fun deciding which crack and seam to scramble at the top half.

Great hike. There is a book to sign at the top of the summit.

To short! The twists, turns, views and route finding nature of this scramble left me wishing for another 2,000 vertical feet!
