Super awesome trail, right behind the prison The trailhead stinks a bit, but after a half mile of hiking you quickly lose the scent. The beginning is casual, but the vert shows up quickly. The hills are not super tall, but you will gain the elevation quickly then lose is again on the backside. Follow the North Loop to the backside and you will do a steep climb to an OHV parking lot, this is essentially the end of the hike. Had a ton of fun running the hills, and power hiking up the climbs. Only ran into a couple of people while out there Super exposed, so prepare for hot weather. It was raining for me so nice and cool :)

If you want to start at another point, parking at the Prison Hill Recreation area at 5th & Carson River Rd. provides access to the North Loop portion. 5.1 mile round trip with that starting point.

Didn’t see any snakes or coyotes but they’re out there somewhere so I tried to be aware. Rocky. Went off trail at one point accidentally because some areas are not well marked. Didn’t walk the loop but had some great views which made the incline worth it.

An excellent trail for a afternoon hike. Great for taking the dogs and letting them in and explore. Also would be a good area to mtn bike or horseback ride

Great loop. You can make it anywhere from one mile to 6-ish depending on what path you choose. Be careful if you bring your dogs. We had a pack of 6 coyotes stalk us for quite a distance today

Good hike, uphill to start, no shade. Best to hike the trail in the morning or in the fall and early spring. My boys have done this trail with me many times. Depending on some of the side trails, you can increase you distance or take a short cut down the hill. Great views of Carson, Gardnerville, and Moundhouse.

Nice trail with views all around. The map got a little confused with some of the trial offshoots but I found my way. Very exposed and parts of the trial are thick sand.

Nice morning hike with the dogs. Several trail options in Carson City’s Prison Hill Recreation Area. We did the North Loop, which is a 3.8 mile trail that provides scenic views of Carson City on the west side of the loop and the Carson River on the east side. This trail is probably suitable year round as long as there is no snow on the ground. Probably best in spring and fall, but be aware there is no shade so probably best during the morning hours during the summer.
