Conquer the summit of Mt Rose and enjoy the waterfalls, alpine lakes and great Lake Tahoe views. Mt. Rose may be the second tallest peak in Tahoe basin and prominent feature of the northern Lake Tahoe skyline, but despite its 2,300ft elevation gain the journey to the peak is best described as pleasant rather than challenging.

Spent the night at the trailhead in my car before heading out about 5:30am to hit the trail. Very pleasant slight climb the first 2.5 miles to the waterfall. Slightly more uphill to the saddle but not too bad at all, amazing views of the canyon and Reno and a stunning place to be with the sun coming up. Ran into my first person at saddle as they were coming down from a sunrise summit! Sounds like they left from the trailhead around 4:15am. Last 1.2 miles or so to the summit from saddle was about 1,000 feet of climb in the form of switchbacks. Last few switchbacks above treeline get quite windy and made me very glad I had a windbreaker. Amazing views at the top and a very easy descent down. By the time I got back to the saddle on the way down I start to hit large crowds and that continued the rest of the way down, probably saw over 100 people on the trail on the descent. Took 2 1/4 hours up with a number of stops and 1.5 hours down. Very clear and well marked trail the whole way. Would highly recommend going early to beat the weekend crowds!

Excellent hike. Starts off flat and easy. Picks up after the waterfall. Summited in just under 2 hours. Make sure to take the alternate trail back like the recording has and you'll be rewarded with more great views of Tahoe Meadows, the lake and a pond. Worth the extra distance on the way back.

Great trail. Tons of butterflies (California Tortoise Shell butterflies to be specific) along the trail and especially at the summit, which was really cool. Wildflowers were equally beautiful, especially after the waterfall. I actually liked thought the views on the trail hiking down from the summit to the waterfall were the most beautiful. Trail was clear and in good shape.

Arrived at the trail right around 11:00am and the parking lot was slammed with cars. We lucked out and managed to get a parking spot right as we pulled up. The trail was very busy with hikers and dogs, but nonetheless the hike up to the summit was fantastic with many incredible views along the way. I really like this trail because of it’s diversity. You’ll pass through forest, beautiful meadows, over streams, passed a waterfall, and of course the giant slabs of rock at the summit. It’s a tough trail but worth the effort and achievement of reaching the top. A little plus during our hike was the thousands of California tortoiseshell butterflies that are currently swarming the summit. Cool experience!

The ground looked alive with the movement of millions of butterflies. None of which land on you. A beautiful hike with amazing views.

2 miles to a nice patch of snow for photo op, then another .50 to waterfall. You can head-back for nice 5 mile out and back or suck it up and go to the summit for some amazing views and butterflys. The trail is easy to follow but go early if you plan to go within the next week or so. It gets crowded and a tad warm. When you head up the summit around mile 4 the sign says 1 mile - it’s actually 1.5 so be warned.

Trail is easy to follow. Rocky and slippery in spots. Steep toward the top. The last 1.5 miles is hard. The last 0.5 miles is damn hard. But the views are stupendous. There isn't a lot of room at the top, enough for a 15-20 at the rock summit and another 10-12 at the wind shelter. Oh, and the butterflies are otherworldly.

We started at about 8 AM which worked well as there was some traffic but not bad. Trail is in fantastic shape, tons of beautiful wildflowers and the waterfall and streams are running, even some snow in a few places (not on the trails). Hike was long and difficult as advertised. Bonus of the day was seeing thousands of California Tortoiseshell Butterflies, they were covering the summit! We took the alternate route back and logged 11.6 miles and 3091 in elevation change, AllTrails review makes it sound easier and less elevation?

Amazing hike! It’s definitely very heavily trafficked, but I get why. Beautiful views all around, lots of wildflowers, and a really pretty waterfall about halfway though. This hike was definitely very challenging. I went with a really fit group and it took us about 4.5-5 hours with a stop at the top for lunch. My advice is to bring lots of layers and stay very hydrated to avoid altitude sickness.

Left the trail head at 7:45 AM. Lots of cars already in the parking lot. A handful of Creek crossings and so many wildflowers! Made it to the summit with my 11 year old son in 2.5 hours. Very cold and windy up top. Must have passed 100+ hikers on their way in as we headed back so be sure to get an early start. Overall great day on the trail.

Fabulous trail! One of our favorites, but the altitude is no joke, especially for visiting “flatlanders.” The hike to the waterfall is perfection. The climb to the summit is hard, even for experienced hikers. You’ll need the better part of a day to allow for rest stops if you are not used to the thinner air. So many beautiful views and wildflowers. Worth it!

Hiked on 8/4/19. No snow over the trail all the way to the summit. Favorite hike in the Tahoe area! Incredible views for a majority of the hike. Bugs weren’t bad and there were millions of butterflies at the summit. I would only rate the last mile to the top as hard. The rest was easy/moderate. Very rocky at the top, easy to lose footing. Heavily trafficked on a Sunday, almost always saw another person. Bathrooms were out of order at the trail head but outhouses available.

We started this one at 730 am on a Tuesday and saw many others starting at this time or a little before. We were lucky enough to experience the tortoise shell butterfly migration at the summit which was pretty cool The first half is pretty flat and the second half has some decent elevation gains. This one was the easiest out of Tallac, pyramid, Freels and offered a different view of the lake and nice views of Reno. Start early, take plenty of water and sunscreen and enjoy

Awesome hike! We were lucky enough to join the butterfly migration up to the summit! This one kicked our butts though. Would definitely suggest starting earlier to beat the heat and sun. We had no issues with bugs and did not need to use spray, but always a good precaution. Trekking poles would definitely be beneficial. Coming down from the summit initially the terrain is very loose and a lot of people were sliding and slipping. Be careful and enjoy :)

This was a beautiful hike. The waterfall about half way to the peak was awesome! Several small run off stream crossings. The first half of the hike to the waterfall is mostly flat. The second half has the elevation gain. This would be a great easy hike if you had some hikers who wanted to stop and hang or picnic at the waterfall while others pressed to the summit. We hit the trail at 6:00 a.m. and it made for a nice cool climb. The second half of the trail looks like it would be hot and sun exposed in the afternoon. Fantastic views from the top!

Amazing hike! The views are worth the last two miles of straight up hill. No more snow on trail. Wild flowers in bloom and thousands of butterflies.

Beautiful trail. The waterfall about 2 1/2 miles in is amazing. If you continue on to the summit from there it gets much more difficult. There isn’t much shade. Be sure to bring lots of water and wear sunscreen. Bug spray is also recommended because there are mosquitoes and biting flies. The view at the summit is majestic, completely worth the effort to get up. The streams, wildflowers and butterflies are beautiful.

If you start early in the morning, it is more a moderate trail. But the heat will exhaust you if you start to late. I was around 06:30 am at the trailhead, it was just the right time when I got around 11.00am back to the parking lot. A beautiful scenic view on Lake Tahoe and pyramid lake along the way. The diversity is as beautiful as well and highly to recommend. P.S but Important: There was a lady looking for her dog, I hope she found her. It was an Husky Germany Shephard mix. If you might see the dog, please call the animal service, they should have the contact details of the owner.

There is a reason it is so heavily trafficked. Absolutely beautiful. Tough hike to get to the top, but well worth it!

Nice trail!! Beautiful views. Get there early, it gets crowded. Be ready to put in some work after the waterfall. Enjoy!!
