Island Lake trail is all up hill on the face of the mountain. We got up to the trail head around 9am and but the time we were half way up the trail the sun was baking us nicely. The lakes was a cool refreshing reward at the end. I would definitely do this hike again even of it is hot because the views are totally worth it.

Beautiful hike and lake (which, in July, was warm enough to swim in). Also note that snowcocks, birds as big as turkeys originally from Himalayas, live around this lake area. We didn’t see any but were told that people can usually catch a glimpse of them in the morning.

Gorgeous views from a well maintained trail. Lots of switchback make this a relatively easy climb. The waterfall is definitely a highlight of the hike!

Pretty easy. We started around 5 pm and made it up and back before dark. there were A LOT of knats up top. The trail just weaves back and forth up the mountain for a while, but you walk through millions of colorful flowers, then the top of the mountain has some rocks and pine trees. We'll do it again one morning.

From my experience, the best route to Thomas Peak is to generally bear NW from the lake toward the chute between the north and west ridges. Note that the area north of the lake is full of seeps and so probably the best route is to start on the east side of the lake and head north, skirting east of the boggy area until you're above it, then traversing westerly up the slope. The trickiest part is finding a safe route to the very top of the ridge. I found a small chute (see uploaded track). Note that the scramble from Island Lake to Thomas Peak is very strenuous and pretty exposed. Also, it would be great if HTNF or a good samaritan would cairn a route to Thomas Peak, to reduce damage to the alpine meadows.

Amazing wildflowers this time of year (mid-July)! Fairly easy hike, would be a great family day trip. There are lots of switchbacks so you hardly even notice the elevation gain!

Very rewarding to get to this awesome lake. I wouldn’t mind fishing up here next time I go.

Nice trail to a beautiful little lake. I'd love to see this canyon in spring with the winter thaw. We will be back for sure.

This is a short but beautiful hike. From the fork in the road at the end of Lamoille Canyon, it's 2.8 miles up to the lake. Enjoy the scenery of the canyon as you climb.

Island Lake is a nice hike and makes a convenient access point to Eleven Thousand foot Thomas Peak. From the lake, hike north to the ridge and then a short scramble east to the summit. The views are spectacular in all directions. The accompanying photo is looking NW to Mt. Fitzgerald, another 11,000 foot mountain along the Ruby Mountain spine.

Easy t moderate hike. Lots of switch backs that unfortunately have erosion damage due to people straight lining the trail.
