We started in Camptonville, CA and drove eastward on Henness Pass Rd. Smooth sailing until we found deep snow a couple miles after the short paved section of Henness Pass Rd (near the split for 98). Elevation was around 6200 ft. At first it was just scattered snow drifts, and our Tacoma handled those with ease, but then the entire trail was covered in deep snow and it was time to reroute. We backtracked to 98 and took that around and reconnected with Henness Pass Rd near Middlewaters and Keystone Gap for a spectacular view of the Sierra Buttes. Throughout the journey there were several large fallen trees completely blocking the trail, but we pulled them aside with a tow strap, easy peasy. We camped near Milton Lake, and I'd say it probably took us 5 hours to get there from Camptonville since we stopped for tree removal and rerouting. Be sure to download maps ahead of time and bring a good paper map. There are lots of trails and one might get turned around, especially if rerouting around snow. When dry, 4x4 would not be necessary. Fairly tame route, some decent views from time to time. Nice and quiet, we drove it on a Friday and only saw one other vehicle (until we got to the lake). After Jackson Meadows the road is paved, but watch for alternate dirt routes that meander along the creek/river. We ended our trip once we reached Hwy 89.

Encountered two blockages, traveling West. First was a large tree across road 301, had to turn back and take an alternate route (70). Then near Allegheny, the road was covered with deep, loose squishy snow. Had to turn back. This is late June!

The map only shows the western half of the road, which takes you another 30 miles to Verdi, Nv. I took two days going west to east, camping at Jackson Meadows reservoir the first night. From camptonville, it climbs quickly and you pass the original toll house as you climb to the top of the ridge . You'll thread this ridge as it takes you all the way to Jackson Meadows. The entire route has remarkably gentle grades but the road does get rubbly in places . Biggest concern on my trip was fallen trees across the road, and there were Many. Passage around them (many had been trimmed a bit by chainsaws) was quite tight along a few sections of wall road . Trees are dying up there in the millions nowadays , so maybe take a chain saw if you are hell bent on not turning back .Two quick stretches of pavement mar an otherwise clean run of dirt from the California gold country on the western slope to dang-near Reno . This is not a dramatic route , but seeing Reno to the east as I came down the last pass was pretty cool . This is the route the Donner Party wishes it had found .

The road is interesting mainly for its historical value. It was a main route connecting the California gold fields and the Comstock Lode in western Nevada in the late 1850s to 1868, when the Central Pacific Railroad route over Donner Pass was completed. The road is easily navigable by 2 wheel drive or 4 wheel drive vehicles with adequate ground clearance. Portions on the eastern side of the summit are very rocky. Views are fairly mundane and few artifacts remain.

Nice fireroad with a few options for exploring. Sections are rough but generally the road can be traveled in 2 wheel cars, trucks, etc. 4x4 not required in good conditions. Nice scenery along the way. Used as an alternate commute route when i80 is backed up for RenoTruckee or vice versa.
