Not hard by any means, unless you take side trails that we didn’t take. I don’t think we ever left 2H. (I’m in a stock JL on 33s). I don’t know that I would do it in street tires, however, especially if you decide to explore any trails off the main drag. Gold Butte is BEAUTIFUL, though, with so much history. We went in the spring, and there were flowers everywhere- including the endangered Bear Poppies, which were fun to see. If you are interested in the historical stuff, do some research before you go so that you can find the petroglyphs and other noteworthy things more easily, especially when it’s hot. Also, consider downloading the maps for all the side trails in the monument, because you won’t be able to do it when you get there. There’s almost no cell phone reception, so you won’t be able to look anything up in the monument. I can’t wait to go back and do more exploring!

This trail is more of a scenic trail than off road fun. Nice sights, like the devil's throat. saw plenty of cows, a fox, and rabbits. Nice relaxing scenic trail. Did it in a stock JL. If you stay on the main dirt road, just about any vehicle can do it. The fun starts if you branch off and take those trails.

If your looking for a fun off road trail this isn't it. this is a paved/gravel road the whole way. Any vehicle can do it. There are some ok trails that branch off but this road is not worth the trip

We did this trail last weekend (April 2019) after seeing description of trail as difficult, we were expecting some fun. This road has been graded recently, and could travel at a very fast clip. Even if there were washouts, we did not see anywhere that would ever be deemed much more than easy. The views and landscape where awesome. The trail is definitely worthwhile. Just don’t go expecting any challenging driving, that part is borderline boring.

Ran the offroad trail as marked adding in slight detours to Devil's Throat sinkhole, and up Mud Wash Road to Little Finland before hooking into Gold Butte Wash Road around the butte and hooking back into the New Gold Butte Road. Very scenic drive, New Gold Butte Road itself is in excellent condition that most any vehicle could traverse, the other wash roads had some deep sand/mud, minor steps, and very rocky in parts as most washes are. Nothing high clearance can't handle, 4X helpful but not necessary. Highly recommend the detour to Little Finland which is beautiful red rock ridge with spring flowing out and palm trees growing into the ridge, very scenic and peaceful. Plenty of hiking opportunities throughout the drive and many more roads to explore if you have the gas for it.

New to the area, I was unloading my CAN AM at the paring area and a man was unloading too. He came over and ask if I was alone and I said yes . He invited me to ride with his group. This was a great trip with all types of roads and trails. Posted 89.5 miles on my trip meter Saw many different types of rock formations, petroclips even a giant sink hole 5 stars for off roading.

Great area, however it was hard to find some of the petroglyphs. No signage for roads or directions to petroglyphs. We did a lot of searching on-line to find areas. I recommend a GPS.
