RT or a 1.2mi. loop to an elephant shaped rock formation in Nevada's Valley of Fire State Park. The Rock is located right next to the main road near the East Entrance. Parking is prohibited there, but you can park at the East Entrance parking lot and take a short 0.2 mile hike to get up close. Take the left fork in the open area to head back toward the main road and up the hill - this will take you right to the rock which is above you to the right as you reach the road. You can easily climb to a vantage point above the rock to take the best pictures. The trail continues along the road and bears off to the right and loops around the rock formations to come back toward the main parking lot on the other side. The loop is 1.2 miles. Watch for lizards and snakes. The rock formations are very interesting. The Valley of Fire derives its name from red sandstone formations, formed from great shifting sand dunes during the age of dinosaurs. Complex uplifting and faulting of the region, followed by extensive erosion, have created the present landscape. Other important rock formations include limestones, shales, and conglomerates. Prehistoric users of the Valley of Fire included the Basket Maker people and later the Anasazi Pueblo farmers from the nearby fertile Moapa Valley.

7AM! We had a blast entering in from the Lake Mead side of the highway and hit this site first! Nobody there yet and early enough not to be too hot. You can park right below this rock formation and take a quick hike up. The trail is marked with some fading white chalk and takes you directly up and behind for an awesome view! FYI: Signs say not to walk on the road.

short trail easy for kids and pets. Was easy to get lost. It's right off the road.

There's actually a looping trail here, but many people took the direct route to the elephant rock. I recommend the loop, as there is plenty of beautiful scenery to enjoy.

I wouldn’t really call this a hiking trail. It’s a small short walk along the side of the main road right on the east entrance of the park. The rock formation is pretty neat though.

Have not been yet but if you are going to give a rating take the time to leave a sentence or 2 than just giving it a 1-3 stars

We walked the loop at this stop and enjoyed all of the amazing formations.

this is actually one of my least favorite areas of the park. However if you cross the street from the parking area and go up the hill there's lots of fun rocks to scramble over and a pretty view of Lake Mead

You can see the formation as you drive by, but there is no parking along the road - park in the lot near the east gate and take the short walk up the hill. It's a cool formation, and you can see it quickly enough that it won't cost any time.

I wouldn’t quite consider this a trail as it is right off the road at the East entrance. If you’re in the park you might as well stop for this as well and snap a few pics. Very neat Little Rock formation.

Walking up behind the rock is the best way to see it, imo.

Short trail in a neat looking area. The rock itself is kind of cool, I guess. The glowing red rocks is the coolest part about the park though!

I agree the rock is smaller than you would think. Also quite easy to walk past. when you turn the corner don't miss the sign and look up!

There is a sign asking you to keep off the rock which was a disappointment because of all of the pictures that I'd see of people getting up close to the rock

Ummm- cool rock formation, but literally right off the road and smaller than it seems in pics.

There is no need to hike anywhere to see the Elephant - it can be viewed from the road. Not sure why this isn't more clearly indicated...the trail head is very misleading and unnecessary.

It was ok.

Simple and easy trail with a fun payoff in the Elephant Rock.
Downside is that you can see fairly well from the road, but the trail that leads to the back is pretty.
Can't complain too much for this short pretty hike.

Elephant Rock is such a cool arch! It's right along the road to Valley of Fire State Park, and takes only a couple of minutes to see. It's totally worth it! Your best pictures of Elephant Rock will come once you walk through the arch and climb a little ways behind it. You'll get a great shot of Elephant Rock, as well as the surrounding landscape.
