Dry Pond Loop is a 6.5 mile heavily trafficked loop trail located near Washoe Valley, Nevada that features a river and is rated as moderate. The trail offers a number of activity options and is best used from March until October. Dogs and horses are also able to use this trail.
One of the best hikes on the Reno side of Mt. Rose. 75% heavily wooded, great shade. Sound of rushing water for 90% of the hike. Both Whites Creek and Thomas creek run year round even in drought conditions. Great views of Carson Valley, Washoe Lake and Mt. Rose Wilderness.
Feb 18, 2021 - trail was icy in patches. I did it with no spikes and one pole and would have been kicking myself if I thought I could do it without slipping and falling. Maybe first time here. Gorgeous. Peaceful. I’ll be back.
Beautiful morning! Icy in some spots. Easy with microspikes. Lightly trafficked.
I started at the Thomas Creek trailhead. the trail from dry pond down to White's Creek is very muddy at the moment. I advise ascending and descending from Thomas Creek.
Beautiful about halfway through right around Dry Pond. That's when you get to see the views. Otherwise fairly generic walking through the woods. The great thing about this loop is it's populated (if you're a solo hiker) snow is packed and it is simple to follow. Used microspikes but could have done the entire trail without them.
This was a fairly easy hike. Going up to the loop was not bad at all. I suggest parking on the side of the road since coming down the loop you have to walk all the way around back up the the parking lot. There was some shade however there were parts that were completely in the sun. Overall, it was a fun hike. Well worth it!
This trail is beautiful this time of year. The creek bottoms are lush and green, the northern slopes still have plenty of wildflowers, and there are tons of birds. Doing the loop up Thomas Creek with a cut over by Dry Pond, then back along White's Creek is also a good one if you just want to get out for a few hours of hiking. I also would recommend this for beginner hikers as there's a moderate amount of elevation gain to Dry Pond and plenty of switchbacks.
Love this trail did it a few weeks ago with my sister who hikes all the time and she also loved it. My 11 year old neice was able to do this one with no problem. Just hiked it again beautiful and got all 3 seasons in one morning. Some winter, spring and fall =) I suggest reversing it too.
Started and finished the loop today. I was very pleased with the cooperation and courtesy between hikers and bikers. Some of the bikers have bells on their bikes. This makes passing fast and safe. The creeks are running and occasionally you will see someone fishing them. The weather was near perfect. I will do this again.
Always a good one. I went out and back because I prefer the view, but the loop is nice too. You’ll have to park on Timberline and walk in because the entrance is closed. Started at 7:30am. Only saw 3 people the whole time.
Good day out there today. Perfect weather. Lots of people but everyone staying distanced. My 4-legged hiking partner and I did just over half of this hike. First day out breaking in some new equipment so no need to overdo it. The trail was in great shape. Stream is running nicely though seems a bit low for what should be the heavier runoff period. May be a dry summer up here... Love this area!
Excellent trail. If you go right now, I would highly recommend going from the Lower Creek trail to Dry Pond, then going back. The trail from Dry Pond to the Upper Creek trail is very muddy and snowy, and does not have the views that the Lower Creek trail has. There are only a couple spots of snow and mud on the Lower Creek trail. Wide trails, and beautiful river and hill side views. Some mountain bikers on the route.
