Buffalo canyon is probably the best hike in the Santa Rosas on the west side. It's a nice and gradual climb until you get to the base of the crest, where the elevation starts to climb. There are several pockets of aspens and other trees that do provide some shade until you get to the crest area. The crest is awesome! On clear days you can see for miles, both into Orovada and Paradise Valley. You could continue along the crest to summit some peaks; or you can continue left to continue onto the Singas Creek trail. There are a few creek crossings which would be difficult to cross in early spring/high snowmelt.
