Storm Castle Peak is a 7.4 kilometer heavily trafficked out and back trail located near Bozeman, Montana that features a river and is rated as moderate. The trail is primarily used for hiking and is best used from June until October. Dogs are also able to use this trail.
Just a short drive from Bozeman, this popular trail climbs up from Storm Castle Road and offers incredible views from the top. There is a small parking area along the road, and the trail curves northward up the mountain from there. Note that there is a gate on the road leading to the trailhead. This gate closes in winter due to snow. If the gate is closed, add 3 miles roundtrip to the hike.
Went in First week of October and WOW! Muddy, and snow water mix at top. Elevation gain is almost 2000 from start to finish (very top). Pretty steep but doable. Definitely recommend trekking poles and spikes. It’s BEAUTIFUL. Worth all the storms along the way
The trail was in great condition today. Rarely icy except for the top ridge. The trail itself has plenty of switchbacks, not too many rocks or roots, fairly smooth overall. Not muddy. Awesome views!
What an incredible experience! The trails and views were amazing. There's a fair amount of snow and mud along the way so microspikes wouldn't hurt but it's beautiful all the way to the top and worth the effort. We met some great guys and their pup on the way up and had a pleasant chat. Each person we passed was friendly. I would highly recommend doing this trail while it's nice. I may even go again soon!
Small trailhead; road was open although there was some snow. Thick woods, consistent uphill grade the whole way without being too strenuous. The switchbacks were well-structured and allowed for quick elevation gain without getting so steep as to be laborious or cause for scrambling. Lots of breaks in the treelines for great pano views. Outstanding (nearly 360) view from the definitive summit. Packed snow on trail but had micro spikes which made it easy. Snow will probably be gone in a few days. Loved the hike. 4.5/5 stars - half star off for the road noise heard constantly off of Hwy 191. Accessibility of trail gets an A.
Clean trail, seasonal leaves are turning to rust and will probably have fallen to the ground by next weekend. Beautiful trail, quite a few friendly people and dogs on the trail today. A bit windy at the top but perfect feel following the climb to the top.
Amazing hike! Beautiful vistas on the way up and spectacular view from the top! Steep at parts. I’m from the Appalachians so I call this one a “Montana moderate”. Windy at the top and much cooler so bring layers. This is a must do hike in the Bozeman area!
Really wonderful hike, although we lucked out with a cool day. In the height of summer, this would be best in the early morning as there are stretches that would be super hot in the sun. The trail is narrow so please accommodate people and step aside when logical to let people pass in either direction.
