We backpacked this trail in August and stayed 2 nights at Shelf Lake. The first 6 miles are fairly easy with gradual elevation gain through mostly pine forest with occasional meadows to break up the scenery. Beautiful meadow at around 4 miles where you cross the creek, great place for lunch and a break. The last 2 miles are strenuous as you climb almost straight up to Shelf Lake. The trail becomes more difficult with rocks and tree roots. Shelf Lake is a wonderful, secluded camping spot. Take the short hike up to the Sky Rim Trail above the lake for spectacular 360 views.
