Coming down the trail we knew which way to not go. The trail still goes through tall brush and is not distinguishable, but follows a much smoother gradient. I highly recommend following roughly my path rather than the AllTrails map, particularly for the beginning where there is an offshoot trail that works well but misleads you once it ends.

Trail is not defined at all in many areas.

The map takes you through tall brush and woods with no trail. Kept on following the most visible pathways which continually lead to dead ends. Beautiful views but some very steep off trail portions.

We did this from the opposite side (TH across the road from Blacktail Deer Creek TH) and it was quite leisurely. We had two cars so left one at the Gardiner side and drove to Blacktail. There's a short climb initially but otherwise mostly flat until you get about 5.5 miles in and it's semi-steep downhill for 1/4 mile or so. I always advise trekking poles but that's just my knees talking :)
