Passage Falls is a 5.1 mile lightly trafficked out and back trail located near Livingston, Montana that features a waterfall and is rated as moderate. Wow! Loved that the trail was near the creek bed the whole way. Was interesting to see even with the fire damage. LOVED the falls at the end, worth every step! Very flat (and muddy) hike, with climb at the very end. Would definitely recommend. The road coming in is about 10 miles of potholes- so make sure to take it slow!
Fun hike, but very highly trafficked by horses (lots of scat). Hardly any vegetation due to a recent fire. Waterfall at the bottom was great!
Due to the fire there is less coverage making it a little hot, but super easy and absolutely gorgeous! I highly recommend it, just make sure you bring some water!
An easy trail to the falls. I think we marked it out to be about 5mi and it’s out and back so depending on the exploring at that falls it could be more or less. The path to the falls was a little sketchy, but with good footing and putting your dogs on leash it wasn’t bad. It’s a very rewarding hike. Bring water and snacks!
Hike is through a burnt out area without much vegetation. This was not a favorite hike of mine. We stopped at the top and didn’t go all the way down to the falls because the switchbacks were unstable and dicey.
It was really smoky today and that, combined with all the deadfall, made for a dystopian experience. Nevertheless, we had fun. Couldn't find the waterfall though! We realized on our way back that our mistake was in taking a left turn at the fork in the trail instead of right. Someone had carved that into the sign - though we didn't notice it as we were heading out.
Nice easy beautiful hike! Trail is a bit grown over in places but nothing terrible.
Loved this trail! My full size sedan handled the large holes in the dirt road to get to the trail head just fine. The trail was pretty flat most of the way with gorgeous wild flowers, but no shade so make sure you wear a hat and/or sunscreen. Social distancing is difficult if you pass groups—trail is narrow. Ran into maybe 6-7 other groups. Some dogs are off leash. Bugs were not bothering us. Several places for the dogs to hop in the creek to cool off and drink along the way. We went to the top of the falls and did not take the narrow switchbacks down to the bottom—looked too dangerous for dogs.
great little hike, get there early am as there is no shade until the falls, trail clocks in around 6 according to my GPS falls are very pretty go to the top nice shade and a place to have a snack saw good amount of people on the trail. would do it again. bring plenty of water.
Nice flat hike until a small uphill right before the falls. Go early or later in the day as there is little shade. Great water access all the way for 4 legged companions. I didn’t go down to the bottom of the falls as the trail was a bit sketchy.
Hiked on 7/15. Very little shade on the trail, so was glad to get out early. Beautiful hike full of wildflowers that ended at a great waterfall. On the easy end of the moderate rating, with just a small incline to get to the falls. Only wildlife we saw were snakes but they moved out of the way quickly.
The trail is pretty flat for the majority of the hike, as well as being exposed to the sun due to the wildfires from a couple years ago. This also created a great environment for wildflowers. The trail down to the falls is sketchy and steep but worth it when you get to the bottom. We all had water shoes on so we could get right in close to the falls. Spectacular falls and scenery, and hardly anyone on the trail when we did it on a Friday afternoon.
A nice breeze blew through the canyon today, a very warm day. The foliage is gorgeous, and the wildflowers were spectacular. There was one particular area on the switchbacks down to the bottom of the falls was a bit sketchy for me, as I'm not in the best hiking shape! Phenomenal view... well worth the hike!
Nice trail. A little more populated than expected with a lot of dogs off leash. Beautiful falls at the finish. The view from the top and bottom are both great.
Nice easy walk along the creek until you near the falls, when there’s a bit of elevation climb. Go right at the first fork in the trail (don’t cross the bridge), then left at the second fork if you want to see the bottom of the falls (or right if you want to see the top — both are recommended and quickly doable once you’re there). Getting down to the falls involves a narrow switchback and the area by the falls is steep without much area to comfortably rest. The forest is still burned out from a 2018 fire but there are lots of signs of regrowth, including plenty of wild flowers. The falls are impressive. A good 2-3 hour hike depending on your pace.
Easy hike in and out, fairly level till the end right before the falls. Waterfall is very powerful and beautiful! Dirt trail that’s smooth with limited rocks.
Awesome waterfall at the end! Really easy dirt path walk out, brief part of uphill. There are 2 forks in the road. The first one, we did NOT take the bridge and went right. Second we went left and that brings you down to the falls. Right on the second fork brings you to the top of the waterfall. It does get pretty narrow and steep for a small section going down to the falls. Beautiful secluded area. Would recommend! Lots of wildflowers on the way! Little muddy but not bad at all.
Attempted this hike, we got about 1/4 of the way in and had seen 3 snakes on the trail. We turned around and saw a fourth snake on the way back. Overall a good hike but be on the look out for snakes.
Amazing falls! I'm actually surprised its rated moderate and not easy, only the very end does it get difficult. The switchbacks down to the falls are kinda hairy, but they're over quick. Trail was muddy but I think that was because of recent storms. You do have to cross a small creek/stream thats kind of difficult to cross this time of year. When there's a mile of the trail left you reach a fork- stay to the right! Do not cross the bridge. This wasn't marked well. Amazing hike overall though!
