Mount Aeneas Summit Trail is a 10.0 kilometer moderately trafficked out and back trail located near Bigfork, Montana that features a lake and is rated as difficult. The trail is primarily used for hiking and is best used from May until October. Dogs are also able to use this trail but must be kept on leash.
Great hike. Cloudy day so the views weren’t as great as they usually are but still a great hike.
Hiked the trail today with my friend and we almost died . Once we got to the summit we met some people that told us to hike down to the lake and it “loops around”. There were barely any signs and we followed a trail that took us 8 miles away from the trail we needed to go on . We were lost and luckily with no service used google maps to trek back to the summit and go all the way back to the parking lot. We didn’t have enough water or food were so dehydrated and unprepared for that. We had encounters right before the summit with wolves and walking back on the main path with mountain lions twice (not sure if it was the same one) growling at us. We were beyond scared and happy we made it safe getting back before midnight . Besides all of that the views were breathtaking
Just enough elevation gain to make it a workout, and just enough exposure to make it exciting! Around 7 miles and less than 2k feet of elevation gain. The long drive to the trailhead is bumpy, but a lighter vehicle can make it without 4WD. I did it in a half ton pickup and only needed 4x4 in a couple very steep spots. Lower clearance vehicles should be fine as long as you take it slow. Thick woods the first couple miles, so be bear aware. Great hike for dogs, but be cautious of steep drop-offs at the ridge. Check out my video of the hike, here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TBuioXrJOso
Great trail. Road leading to the trailhead is best in a 4wd vehicle but plenty of people in fwd cars. Hike had great views and was a lot of fun.
We went 3 days ago and essentially hiked in the clouds so there were no views. I’d suggest going when it’s a clear day because I feel like we missed out. We also got tricked by the false summit because it was so foggy we couldn’t see that the trail continued until a couple of hikers emerged from it and told us we hadn’t reached the summit yet. So if you see the peak with the facility on it, keep going that’s not the end! We saw quite a lot of pheasants on our hike, they weren’t scared of us so we shared the trail for quite a while and that was fun! The road there was fine to drive in too, for all cars.
Such a great hike!! Wow, took the summit trail up (717) and then stopped by the pyramid lakes on the way down, just take a picture of the map at the trailhead, there were more trails than mapped out in AllTrails. Even saw a mountain goat up top!! Views were so rewarding! Birch Lake from up top looked so inviting to swim in hehe We loved it so much. Road going up was very brutal, we made it in a 2WD Sprinter van. Came later in the morning and the parking lot was packed. Would 100% do this hike again!
The view from the top is nice, but I'd really recommend doing the loop version of this hike via 717/312. Instead of returning the way you came, you cut back though the forest below the overlook, offering more beautiful views, and the wildflowers on the way down were different and stunning (at least as of Sep 1)
well despite what the rating says I would say this is at most moderate. The trail is decently well kept. Not much in the way of steep or dangerous climbs. a few drops are easily avoided. the most dangerous thing are the dumb people who mess with the Mountain Goats.
Lovely semi strenuous hike with adequate shade. The first half of the hike is mostly covered with a wider than average trail and median grade, then a few switchbacks until a communication tower. Past this is an open and rocky trail until the summit. Be sure to bring bug spray!!
Good hike, worth the views. Uphill all the way to the top. Is challenging for beginners. Reccomend getting there early 7-730am. Was able to reach the top and come back down in 4 hours with two dogs (and stopping multiple times). Wear good shoes to prevent blisters and wear a tshirt or tank top. The morning and top of the summit feel chilly but going uphill you will get hot. Lots of people on the way down and narrow pathways. Mountain goats get really close and great pictures all around at the top.
